Grim Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 I have 5 breeding age birds. Two hens and three cocks. I am using them strictly as breeders and have been conditioning them for breeding. i have given them some calcium in the water and fresh grit daily. I really would like some young birds to fly so I am wondering what is the quickest way to get the birds interested in breeding. I plan to keep two large box style cages in my garage with the two cock birds. One in each pen, and then after leaving them separated for a month or so when I add a hen will they be eager to reproduce? I am allowing them to finish up their moult before even enticing them. Also are they ok being in a breeding cage so to speak? I am planning on building a flying loft, and then after i have a stable number of birds add these breeders to the flock and fly them for fun. Thanks for any input, I have them all together now in a large covered flight and the cocks seem to have no interest in the hens.
Guest Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 couple of smarties over there throat for the next week or so
little sam Posted August 15, 2007 Report Posted August 15, 2007 ;)the blue smarties are the best but you will have to buy the one what dosent say no artificial colourings or its no good and only give a half of one at a time or they can choke and i recon the seperating will work m8
jimmy white Posted August 16, 2007 Report Posted August 16, 2007 wheatgerm oil mixed in their food with a little hemp seed
Grim Posted August 16, 2007 Author Report Posted August 16, 2007 Does the wheat germ really work? Or is that a joke?

Hi there..............in terms of breeding YB's to fly, you are too late for this season. Personally I try to calcuate my breeding to co-inside with when the new RRPA rings come out in January....... I pair up mid December, and have them hatching through at the start of January to rung within the first week...Alot of racing pigeion men wait until valentines day...personally I like to get a head start and get the YBs strong and fit..... Keep the cocks and hen split up...............this will give them the drive to get going........as mentioned use wheat oil or feed more wheat, as this 'ups' the sex drive...............I selectivelty pair and when the time is right I'll pen teh pair up for a week in a next box.........this is usually enough (sometimes tey dont take to one another).....usually 10-14 days after the eggs are laid...........21 days to hatching and another 7 days for ringing
jimmy white Posted August 18, 2007 Report Posted August 18, 2007 Does the wheat germ really work? Or is that a joke? no,, no joke ,, it helps anyway ,,
Mark Bulled Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 I dont believe blue smarties or wheatgerm oil will make any difference. When they are mature enough to pair they will. Even then if they are young hens good chance the first eggs will be no good. If it were me i would wait till next year
