birdbrain  in2004 I was in hospital for three weeks only getting out for the weekend my wife looked after the birds in this time she won the last three old bird races and had the birds feeding from her hand not bad for a woman. Now she would like a young bird team of her own  NO CHANCE AS SHE WILL NOT LOOK AFTER OR TRAIN MY BIRDS

We always pair all racers / stock last week in Jan first week in Feb.    Plenty of time to race YBs on the darkness & be in good form all season long.    Why have YBs on the garden in February when April does the job just as well ?

WELL PUT SPECKLED. NOW BIRDBRAIN MAYBE NEXT TIME YOU'LL THINK BEFORE U OPEN THAT MOUTH OF YOURS. JUST REMEMBER WHO U DEALING WITH AS SPECKLED SAID WE GOT THE BALLS PITY U NEVER HAD THE BRAINS

Good point Mike, I have heard that aspect mentioned before. Not having the YB's to feed any longer than necessary. I guess I prefer the earlier rearing (Nov/Dec) because there is not much else going on then. But if I reared for YB's in the garden in April as you say I would be busy training OB's and preparing for the OB race season at that time of year. I am the race secretary, so there is much to do with band lists and assigning electronic bands and such.

And as for BirdBrain, he is just trying to get a rise from us ladies. He can't really be that much of an idiot to think otherwise. From the sounds of his other posts he is a kid and flys with his Dad, maybe his comments reflect what he has heard from his Dad.

I will pair up 2nd week in January, but my mate who breeds me YBS out of his stock loft normally has the, paired up in december for my first round of YBS. If you pair up in Jan, by the time of taking the YBS away, the days are starting to get a bit longer, so you can get the OBS out in the morning and YBS out for half an hour on a night.

We let ybs out in the Morning,

Train old birds in the morning and afternoon, and sometimes flying around the house

Any reason for an half hour in the night for yb's ? Sbelbin
