Guest CS Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 When going to an auction and the "bird that lays the golden eggs" is not available due to cost, what do you buy? Do you buy a son or daughter, a brother or sister, the parents of the bird etc etc?

timbarra Posted November 1, 2007 Report Posted November 1, 2007 i usually buy . if the champion is a cock , i buy his daughter if the champion is a hen , i buy her son. its genetic hereditary quality which is the key mate. genetic should be part of your game when building a winning family and when possibly purchasing new bloodlines. basic genetics is a must nowadays i feel. cheers spence

Guest slugmonkey Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 Try to buy birds from lofts Before they start winning If given a choice get a cock when getting a hen assume birds are good then breed her to 3 cocks, 1st set moved, 2nd set fostered , 3rd set let her raise
jimbobboy Posted November 2, 2007 Report Posted November 2, 2007 I think buying birds is like pulling an arm on a slot machine, you don't know what you have till the wheels quit spinning!!! jimbobboy
jimmy white Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 i have a thing about this [could be well wrong, but proved right in my case] especialy distance pigeons ,, i would prefer birds that have been winning regular in the terrain you stay in , i,e a bird winning a 500 mile race in holland maybe differant winning in scotland ,,,so again horses for courses :-/
THE FIFER Posted November 3, 2007 Report Posted November 3, 2007 if the parents are available i would buy them, as they have bred the goods
retired Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 Try to buy birds from lofts Before they start winning If given a choice get a cock when getting a hen assume birds are good then breed her to 3 cocks, 1st set moved, 2nd set fostered , 3rd set let her raise Very true comment i buy a pigeon i like and with the breeding to match, this does not make it a good pigeon but if i am parting with money it has to be smething i like and as i have done in the past by turning a three times winner from over 3000 birds down for a unproven young bird - my decison was maybe wrong in a lot ofpeoples eyes but i stand by it
sammy Posted November 4, 2007 Report Posted November 4, 2007 think its like everthing else pigeons jimmy you have to breed them to suit your system ,weather environment maybe take years but if its in the blood then it will and does come out ,patience is a virtue when it comes to long distance pigeons ;D ;D
Guest slugmonkey Posted November 5, 2007 Report Posted November 5, 2007 Let me Clarify this statement " before they start winning " by that I mean a loft that is in a bad location or is flying an disproportianatly SMALL number of birds and still winning races look for the guy who is way down the sheet and then look at the flyers in his area if this guy is pounding the others in his area but not doing well at combine or fed he is probably doing something right although the sheets arent screaming that I fly against some good flyers but we definatly have some overfly issues and I still win in spite of this especially when we get out to the distance, year before last we decided to fly short races from north and long from the south in old birds well this was fablous as I was DESTROYING the other guys the only problem was the other guys had lost so many pigeons most didn't have many left to race so we had to change the schedule so the others could compete funny thing though these guys are still selling birds on the internet and I cant seem to give one away
