Chubs, each to their own as they say. But I find it extremely disappointing & sad for our sport etc, when I see someone like yourself, start off like you have " Re drugs etc". I know there may be 1 or 2 that are required by law, so to speak in your local area. But to continue on down the road that you appear to be headed in my view is wrong (I could be wrong) & the only person/persons at the end of the day, who will be better off. Are the vet's & drug company's etc. In my view, you would be just as well off, if you went to your local supermarket/asian store/chinese store or your local health food shop etc, & much of what you would buy, would be 1/4 of the price that your willing to pay etc & do the same thing, within reason.

Finally !!!!!!  ;D ;D ;D you have the greatest tool in front of you today (internet) "Use it", to it's maximum re pigeons etc,  & not just this site. Go exploring & you will be amazed at what you may find at times.

Enjoy.

We got our birds tested by Ian Cameron of Manor Court Vets a few weeks ago to see what if any treatment was needed before racing . We have not treated for worms since 2001 but had virtually nill count for worms , cocci, or canker. Ian recommended no treatment. Using this service for the first time cost us the price of all these treatments and also set our minds at rest. William

I'm only down road from retford poultry so can have tests done if required, i know the birds need worming as i've seen one yesterday, Apart from the para wotsit jab is anything else required to race? I've had quite a bit to do with livestock & haven't seen blind treating like there is in pigeons. I've dealt with cocci in other birds etc & wouldn't have dreamt of treating them for it if there were no signs.

Also...I've seen there is a para/pox combi jab is this worth getting?

And don't worrie about me leanut tar , i work with computers for a living so i'm quite good with the www, a lot of my time is spent learning & a lot of that at the mo is pigeon based l.o.l

chubs, have a good look through the health section on this forum and you will find natural wormers.

I would not use the combined jab and it is not licenced for use inthe UK.

Paramixo is the only jab required for racing so I would recomend you get droppings tested and swobs checked before treating for anything.

only treat for what is found if your birds do not show any signs of infection then do not treat

Fair enough comment & advise etc. "Work with computers" Well your a smarter man than me  ;D ;D I'm hopeless !!!!!!! with them  :D :D :D Not bad with a microscope thou (had a good teacher). Something you may like to consider in the future, & it's a facinating world. If you just happen to have a good one.

I'm also just down the road from a vet (10 minutes) a world renowned one (Pigeons). Never spent a dollar there & I never will. He's rich enough !!!!!!, I'm not going to add to his bank balance  ::) ::) ::) But he did teach me, about the microscope etc, so I'm very thankful for that.

Just a bit of trivia for you. Awhile ago (Maybe even still today) he had a special offer on ???????  :D :D :D Spend $500  :D :D :D on any pigeon medication etc & he would give you a pigeon "Shocking"  :) :) :) & I will let you figure it out here !!!!!!! how many of his birds I have  :X :X :X.

Enjoy.

Happens i know a little about microscopes! My dad is a doctor in microbiology so there's a couple lying about! He's been retired a while now but reckon it'd make his day to sift through some samples!

Where can i get the notes on what i'd actually be looking for?

PLUS - these stock birds i have that i've noticed have worms, they are yet to go down on eggs but i think it's imminent, should i wait till they've reared young to treat for the worms as hen could be eggy now?

I think your dad would have a good idea where best to source the kind of guidance info you are looking for.

I agree with the general advice thats been given here, and I am absolutely delighted that you have decided against blind or preventative medication. I think it is farcical to treat for something you haven't got. I also think Test & treat if needs be  is the sensible way to go.

I'm interested in knowing how you knew you had worms? Have the birds passed any and if not what did you notice? If they are actually passing worms is that not a good thing? Isn't that them de-worming themselves naturally ? If so what are you feeding them?

Posted

yep one of them passed one, i'm not convinced that's a good thing though? When any other animal/bird passes them it's cos they've built up to such a level they come out wether they like it or not, i'd say seeing worms is a sure sign that they need worming.

My dad is a doctor of microbiology for food industry , is there anything on net showing cocci / canker?

I think the main things you need to treat for is Paramixo and Canker. As for Cocci, I'd check the droppings via the scope. If they haven't got it don't treat them. The more drugs you give them the more it will affect their performance. If any of you birds become ill remove them asap and isolate them. You can then make the necessary treatments and hope their bodies combat it and make them immune.

I found a site with the cocci bacteria. I'll try to find it and PM you
