Guest TAMMY_1 Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 Watched what looked like a big batch of pigeons going over earlier and i presume they were being trained, think it is too early here as it is very cold , will be a few weeks yet before mine go anywhere , weather will have to iomprove a good bit yet
ALF Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 Mine have only been out about half a dozen times this year and wont be going near a basket until i have them flying round the loft for a while
Guest spin cycle Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 think you are right. i'm desperate to train but its no good in weather like this as ,even if you got away with it the birds could be huddled up next day.i'm keeping the birds well exersized (even thats difficult) and hoping the weather will break soon (it has to...surely : ). my first race is 5th but its only 57 miles. assuming the birds handle fit how much roadwork would they need? i'll only be sending a few 'oldhands' to this first race

Guest Hjaltland Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 Temperature here today is -2 plus 40 mph wind in the showers.. think it might just be a little while until I'll go out , never mind training the birds!!

Guest spin cycle Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 have sent older birds to races of this distance without any training thanks ,thats what i was wondering (though i still hope to avoid it). we'll just have to see. although i'm not a novice i'm still inexperienced and i tend to be cautious. it can be a problem for fanciers like me to know what is reasonable to expect birds to do and what isn't.

I would expect my older experienced birds to be able to go into some races with no training what so ever, but i am very cautious with yearlings , has to be warmer before they get trained or go to any races, if it is too cold for first races i tend to hold yearlings back a bit , they get lost too easily if they get sent too early to races when weather is not suitable, only my opinion though
Guest IB Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 I think it will be well into May before temperatures top double figures on dependable basis - always has been the case when we have snow here in February which used to be classed as 'late', though its now mid-March and we're still getting it. Often wondered what the human equivalents of some of the exercises we speak of for the birds? If the birds are exercising freely for an hour ( ie ranging the sky, not flying in wee tight circles round the loft) what is this equal to, for example an hours run cross-country ? and what would the starting race of 60 miles be equal to? I usually try to get in a 20 and 30 mile trainer before the first race, but is it really necessary?
Guest Paulo Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Mine have been flying well round the loft and have had 5 tosses so far but keeping them short 15 -25 miles and picking the days. The fools from the club trained them over easter weekend in the snow when I didn't chance it and have had a few bad tosses I took mine away today and had a nice toss despite the temps beimng low. In this weather you really have got to be very careful As Kevin Hurst says "he who waits wins''
Back garden fancier Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 Had them of for first time today, 10 miles all back. Will just take it steady, been burnt before at this time of year. No point losing birds before we en start racing !
Guest shadow Posted March 25, 2008 Report Posted March 25, 2008 way too cold to be training yet wait until the weather warms up and the wind changed from the north

Guest Paulo Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 well if you have ETS it will not be a problem got the clocks converted to timbleless ones now so at least I won't have to fumble around now rubber straight off and in the clock bang bang. Gutted this means I'll never time a fed topper in those timbles you give me last year
