good question......i flew the wrong distances for 2 years before a clubmate insisted they were wrong and we investigated. it turned out that is was 900yds out in some cases. all down to 2 maps being placed together my loft was on the left map but was read from the right hand scale. because of the earths curvature we should have read from the left hand.....confused? i was.......good quality gps is the answer.

it will give  true distances and end confusion using maps

GPS readings are the same as EC's  ;D ;D ;D it's the way of the future & both of them are better than sliced bread  ;) ;) ;) in my view, & pity anybody that want's to live in the past in this sport & do things the old way  :P :P :P.

Enjoy.

All I.H.U. members are now measured by G.P.S. system with the device forwarded to all club Secs, and they doing each members loft location, simplicity in itself, done last winter, now all are accurately measured on same system.

I was reading through one of the fancy presses and it stated "Loft Location's done by GPS is not accepted. They have to be done on an ordance survey map" Well correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the OS Maps have '52 degrees N and 2 degrees W' (not included the minutes here) the same as GPS gadgets like the SAT nav?

I worked out my loft location to the exact using the wife's sat nav. I stood infront of the shed and took the reading. The RPRA just does it to the house (I'm guessing) because you never see anybody come around and map where you loft is in you garden. They might do in clubs but not as an individual member.

I think the reason they are sticking to the maps is that they can make money from it. If every member could do their own loft location then the RPRA wouldn't make it's £2.50 or £5.00 for non members.

Dressed in white gowns with yellow stars waving a piece of astroturf above their heads :-/ The most striking thing about all of them is that their heads are the size of a large satsuma; think too much inbreeding has been going on in the community ;D

Lol it takes all sorts to make the World go Round even if it is FLAT hahaha. I seem to remember a conversation that GPS wasnt used as it wasnt acurate to within 5 metres or something like? but having read the post above where some chap was 900yds out it still has to be a vast improvement so maybe CASTLEVIEW has a very good point there. Google maps are great (satalite) as you can find the exact distances from your training points in a staight line, try it and I bet you will see a difference from using a normal map and much easier!

Ive had our full club pin pointed by GPS for 2 years now and cant use it despite it showing a great no. of mistakes 1 over half a mile out i was hoping it would pass last year and then this year still waiting maybe next year nothing worse than loosing or even winning a race when it is plain to see the distance was wrong hard enough to win with out that

How do you find them Rory,its brilliant,think there may be a couple of discipiles on this site. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

For what I have seen & witnesed etc with the GPS now !!!!!!!, it is the benefit on race day, if you happen to be in an area which is closed in & you may have a holdover etc. with one of them on board the truck etc, off down the road a few miles to a better location & you have a release & a race, & all distances can be recalculated by computor, well before everyone presents their clocks, to get a result. "Just fantastic in my view".  ;D ;D ;D But ?????????  I have been known to be wrong  ;) ;) ;).

Enjoy.
