rasbull Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Hi, I plan to breed plenty of young birds this year as just starting back up and currently have no old bird team. I have worked the dates and if I do, the 3rd round will be weaned 26.6.09, and the 4th the 28.7.09. Now I know, I cant race those rounds this year but what are peoples opinions if I bred them and trained them up slowly over the autumn on the nice days and just let them develop and mature on there own acord. What effect would the moult have on them, and do people think they could amount to anything. I would already have my young bird team bred and trained up, but should things go haywire, at least I would have an interest in the old bird racing come the following April with these birds. Thoughts??????
NW USA Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Hey Rasbull, I started last year with a dozen youngsters weaned first week of July. Trained them out to 70 miles. No losses. Lost two in the fall loft flying to hawks. Good moult, the only problem I've had is they were a little slow to pair up and breed this year, I attribute this to youth and cold weather. I'll probably race these ten out to 300 miles and send them to all distances next year.
sher Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 hi, im going to print your post and show it my racing partner 8)the last three seasons he wants to send our ybs to every race saturdays/wednesdays every week, im the one who gets up early to clean the lofts 5 of them and breed 60 odd ybs each season just to throw them away, we have only 10 old birds to race when racing starts and he wonders why ??)he comes over to my house where the birds are at 5 oclock on the night to inspect all that i have done ??) i want to build a team for the future and it is going to start this year, ive bred 62 ybs and they will be split into three lofts and raced weekly or as i see fit, little does he know its his last season racing pigeons at my home and i will never fly as a partnership again.sorry if this sound a bit strong but ive had enough.
peterpau Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 So you have late breds. As far as I am concerned these are as good as any may be better. Treat 'em with respect don't train in the cold winter. Don't pair up too early, and don't start them till the end of may as yearlings. If you've not knocked their confidence and kept 'em healthy, I would think they will get you more than a few red cards in june. I have late breds from last year and the year before hear, nothing older to race as we moved house and these will not see a basket till may. I've paired up this week. A week later than would be normal, for me, as I like to pair mid march.
rasbull Posted March 26, 2009 Author Report Posted March 26, 2009 Thanks guys for the replies. I was just wondering if the weaning at the end of July would affect them but obviously not. If nothing else will give me an interest after the young bird racing, selecting the nice days and training my late bred team up quietly. Cheers.
Guest Posted March 26, 2009 Report Posted March 26, 2009 Late breds need to be trained in their first year. I bred late ones every year, mainly to put into stock or selective breeding but i did race some and it has to be said not very well. One year i had a spare sect with 4 boxes in so put 4 latebred cocks in, and had them out all day every day in winter, no matter what the weather was. I trained these with my cocks and 1 went out, i put the three in the first race and one of them should of topped the fed, i could give you the number of the lad that lived near me and he saw him come, some 5 mins before our club winner who did top the fed, and prob was he fecked up all my others too. The next week i had 3 drop together, the same cock another of the late breds and the one i clocked (who did top the fed!!), but the same again for these cocks. Eventually it became too much effort and i gave most of them away! One i had left was only bird in racetime from near 500 miles as 2 year old. The moral is they will do ok, but be patient!!
