I've just been told that the earths magnetic field is the lowest it has ever been in recorded history & that the poles are due to change as they do every 100,000 years , could this be the cause of bird losses? sounds reasonable to me.

If it was due to that then it would be gradual as the earths magnetic fields are changing all the time, interesting to see how far the pole has moved over that time bearing in mind we have probably only records for the last few years

could be many causes ,, but whatever it is , its steadily got worse in the last 30 years

Evidence of magnetic pole-change is in the rocks -  happened before, will happen again. No mass extinctions. No millions of animals 'lost' overnight. That's why I'm very sceptical about magnetic field /solar theory.

I remember also back in the 80's they were saying about a global freeze or another ice age we were headed in!!!  Now all of a sudden we are facing Global Warming!!!!   I smell $$$$$$$$$ in the air with Al Gore and a whole Parlay of people jumping on the wagon!!!!!!!

quite true..the other day i heard the planet had been cooling since 1998 and was going to keep cooling until 2020....then really start to warm up(believe that?). i may be cynical but global warming appeared shortly after the cold war ended...a lot of scientists looking for new jobs perhaps? back to pigeons and i think that,in my own short experience, training/racing unfit pigeons is a big cause. if you've only a dozen or so you are more inclined to train when you've a spare minute...but thirty means longer and more planning. this makes people less likely to train. my point being we all keep to many pigeons in the belief numbers will make us competitive..in reality the same few score week in week out and lofts are filled with unraced pigeons that take time/resources to keep and can mean the loft becomes less competitive

All this is very interesting,however the real answer lies in when we race our birds.

In these parts we start racing around the end of April ,why cause its always been that way. All the answers do not lie in the moon and the stars,or hanging the odd race controler.

 

Its been time for a change for many years now.our towns and cities do not need any more donations of young birds either.

I used to lose my fair share of birds, until last season. In racing I've only lost 4 birds since april 2007. Whats the difference ? Well I've started having my birds tested and taking the required advice ! Had 10 /10 from 205 miles on Sunday. Most have quite s few missing.
