Guest Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 Put your story in the papers, enough is said about the attacks on hawks, look for the same reporter who wrote the recent stories up in cumbria, write to them and ask them to portray the other side of the coin.

Guest numpty01 Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 jagre this is the first sensible thing youve said for ages sorry gooner but this will just give them the view that some that commented are right now if bob was to get local paper to attend his home and show his love of birds then say what is breaking his heart great but the other idea nope that storey is just rspb prperganda
Guest Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 sorry gooner but this will just give them the view that some that commented are right now if bob was to get local paper to attend his home and show his love of birds then say what is breaking his heart great but the other idea nope that storey is just rspb prperganda Might well do that, NOT out of getting sympathy for myself, I don't need it, but to make Joe public aware of the issues that all bird lovers (wild or otherwise) are, ever increasingly, having to face.
Guest Posted July 5, 2009 Report Posted July 5, 2009 Thank you ALL for your kind words and thoughts, I was quite overwhelmed with your encouragement, advice and offers. The kindness and comradeship shown within this fantastic Sport/Hobby is second to none. I have to say that at this moment in time, I cant see me changing my mind. I am still reeling over what has happened and I have lost all interest. My big "hang-up" at the moment is the thought of keeping pigeons just to supply 'percy' with another meal, and I can't deal with that. My son has said about me keeping the stock birds here and flying in partnership with him where he lives, but I don't think I could cope with the torment of having birds here and not having the pleasure of watching them fly out. I have had one spell in my lifetime without pigeons and I really missed them, but unfortunately, of all the reasons why people pack it in, the BOP issue is the biggest single factor that will cripple our sport. Time is said to be a great healer, so I will keep an open mind and hope and pray that this sickening situation is resolved.
Ronnie Posted July 5, 2009 Report Posted July 5, 2009 Bob still train ya birds with a mind to race them while you make ya mind up mate. Try a few of the things people have suggested training after 10am was a big help for me.Ive lost one bird from that last bad toss and thankfully none are hurt just a few are flown out makes me think it wasnt a BOP just a another batch took them.
pigeonpete Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Only just seen this thread bob, hope you re-consider, i know its tuff, but like you said you would regret not racing attall, hope you decide to carry on mate. all the best pete
Guest shadow Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 I gave up 2 years ago for health and falcon problems and after watching the way they are spreading would not contemplate start racing again just to provde food for them nothing more horrific than to watch one of your birds ripped to pieces alive :( :(
Guest stevie-b Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 i know the feeling still 15 youngbirds missing from the bad stint i had but the ones i got home are comming really well 22 miles toss today in a strong north wind home in under 40 minutes they deffo learn

But as someone who has been in and out the sport for the last 5 or 6 years i understand how you feel. If you asked me i'd say think about taking a "year out", keep a few breeders so just in case the bug bites again. I wish i had done this rather than selling up completely. i realise now it will take me another 10 years to get back to where i was just a few yeasr ago having spent 10 years building up what i had!! On the subject of BOP, i think fanciers need to do what a lot of guys are doing over here, and thats changing their entire way of exercising and training YBs, so as to minimise the impact of a strike. I'm still learning here, but have been listening to the lads that have been putting up with the strikes for years. If i want to keep racing pigeons i have no choice, but having spent a few years out i'd rather face the changes and the disappointments than be without the birds. I looked at other hobbies but none really ticked the same boxes as the birds. So i will perservere and see, and like i said above, i hope you do too Bob.
Guest Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 Bob, I've only read your first post, so apologise if I've missed owt. I know the feeling, let me tell you it's ten times worse when it happens around your loft, even in the summer I get hit around the loft. I went to have my national clock read last week and the fancier reading it told me he has no problems cause he lets his YB out at 5.30 in the morning when percy's not about. I've had percy chasing my yb over my loft at 6 am and striking !!! The last two years I have kept my birds in for 7/8 months, not trained my YB last year and suffered this year with untested yearlings. There's not a lot that can be said if it upsets you too much. But I would say persevere, I have thought to give up many times this past 18 months, my loft is a couple of miles away in a field, no facilities, I have peregrines in a quarry a mile and a half away, sparrowhawks and other peregrines in abundance but each time I've decided I have to persevere because I would rather have my birds than not have them; now I've had my driving licence taken away, I'm a right site 57yo, 6'2", 18 stone cycling back and fore, dodgy knees, chipped bone in one since august 1970, think your invincible at the time but then it catches up when you start cycling again and does the rheumatoid arthritus no good at all. But I still love my birds and I haven't got owt from Barcelona an ambition, first time this year and failed, and I want to win the section from Tarbes, thought I might this year but my one real class pigeon went down.... why? well haven't got the quality (other than my fav that has gone down) and can't afford to buy the quality. And then of course there's the time waiting for them birds up the loft in a cow/sheep field with my flask for 16 hrs saturday another 10 sunday and back and for (on my bike) monday, tuesday, wednesday. Bob after writing that I think perhaps your right give them up, what am I keeping them for, I know the birds I need but haven't got them and if I somehow were to get them there's the BOP problem!!! Bob , I'm going to stick at it, can you add to that lot above? If you can't keep at it mate I can tell you love your birds, stick to it. Keep training and letting them out at the end of the day you will have birds left that are street wise and can avoid the hawks as best any birds can. Have a real think about it Bob, if you can't carry on it will be a great shame. I wish you all the best .
Guest numpty01 Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 albear mate there are 4 birds here that would give you what you need free if you really want to chase big races my intrest is not raceing but breeding i let others race them
Guest Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 albear mate there are 4 birds here that would give you what you need free if you really want to chase big races my intrest is not raceing but breeding i let others race them Numpty if you have birds that will breed me 700 milers to come with their peers I would be delighted to have them, but such pigeons are extremley rare..... and don't take offence but not many people can identify them are you sure they will breed 700 milers for example of all the pigeon eyes I have seen on this forum over the past 4 years I have only seen a few that will fly that distance. I have pigeons that have won these past few years from 170 miles across the channel to 556 mile but none of those are 700 milers. Sadly the ones I thought that would failed to fill!! But that's the chance you take when you buy old stock, though I am delighted to have a pair out of the 15yo Jan Aarden I bought at Louella's clearance in November she's with a yearling from Tumley, now they should produce 700 milers but I have reservations that a 15 yo will breed top birds, she has reared the two though and is in good nick
Guest numpty01 Posted July 9, 2009 Report Posted July 9, 2009 well i think what i have will cover that as they are knowno to be able to fly that distance or at least 650anyway
