MsPigeon Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 I was curious as to the routines of other fliers here in the USA and other parts of the world. Please tell us if you vaccinate, for what diseases, YB's or OB's or both, once or twice a year and any other details you could share. Like how you go about it, do you need help, how do you hold the bird, where do you insert the syringe, that sort of thing. Your experince is appreciated. Yours in the sport. Carol
Guest Silverwings Posted October 30, 2005 Report Posted October 30, 2005 in the uk pigeons have to be vacinated againt paramyxovirus ,before they are allowed to compete in races or shows etc ,local clubs are responsible to inspect copies of its members vaccination forms , before competition mebers buy vaccine from various licenced sources and arrange for the vaccinations to be done and witnessed by a club official or designated members , the birds are injected in the back of the neck once a year . all forms are signed and stamped by the club , my stock birds that are at a seperate location are not vaccinated and naver have been, as i feel any side effects as a result of the vaccine is not worth the risk on them , ,
Guest shadow Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 Only vaccinate against para. because defra insist
MsPigeon Posted October 31, 2005 Author Report Posted October 31, 2005 Thank You. That is very interesting guys. So far, at least where I live, they have not forced any vacinnating in the USA. If you had a choice would you still vacinnate? No one vaccinates for parityphoid or pox? Silverwings, have you noticed any side effects to the PMV vaccine? Carol
Guest Silverwings Posted October 31, 2005 Report Posted October 31, 2005 carol ,do quite a lot of vacinations for the local lofts even though i oppose it ( sombody has to do it ) in the past i have seen large canker like tissue form around the injection site ,as jimmy stated in the previous post i have seen the virus form following the injection in healthy pigeons ,after all the vaccine is a low dose of the inactive virus, i have seen a badly stored vaccine kill half of a young bird team ? i often see bad feather growth in later weeks after vaccination ie: incomplete tail feathers ,mutated wing feathers etc also infertility ,hens not laying ,clear eggs and many others , a high percentage of the vaccine is shipped at the wrong tempreture ? turning it into poison before it gets here , and there is no way the fancier can check this ? a total boycot of the process would do for me ! somebody is getting very rich at our expence ! , and as for the birds let their own immune system have a crack at it ! the feral pigeons seemed to do alright ................... ok thats enough from me ( Ray ) i have to over do it ? thanks for posting this caz , gives us a crack at the establishment .
PIGEON_MAN Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 ONLY VACINATE FOR PARAMYXO.BECAUSE WE HAVE TO.LOTS OF FANCIERS I KNOW SAY THAT THEY THINK THE TERRIBLE YOUNG BIRD LOSSES COULD BE DOWN TO THE VACCINATING BUT PERSONALLY I DONT THINK SO, IT,S JUST ANOTHER EXCUSE THEY COME UP WITH.
MsPigeon Posted November 1, 2005 Author Report Posted November 1, 2005 Thank you so much for your opinions, I have not vaccinated routinly myself. I did once for paratyphoid and pox the first year I started, over 15 years ago. But then I stoped because no one else did and did'n't seem to need to. I thought then that my YB's didn't feel well for a week or so after, didn't want to fly much. I been reading a book written by a pigeon flying vet and was contimplating vaccinateing again. But from what I'm hearing it sounds like there is really no need, especially since I have a healthy flock and haven't had problems with any of these diseases. Please keep your opinions coming. Given the choice, would you vaccinate? Carol
speedbird Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 have to vaccinate if racing over the channel do you not race over the channel ms pigeon
PIGEON_MAN Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 PECKEDHEN,KNOWING HOW MUCH YOU LOVE YOUR BIRDS AS WE ALL DO HOW COULD YOU EVER FORGIVE YOURSELF IF ONE DAY A STRAY WITH PARAMYXO DROPPED IN AND MIXED WIYH YOUR BIRDS.GOOD ADVISE BY BRUNO NO OFFENCE MATE BUT I THINK NOT.
Peckedhen Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 Yes, I do love my birds but, given that Bruno has given me plenty of sound advice in the past and having read Silverwing's post above, I think that I will stay with my decision. (Bit like deciding whether to have the kids injected with MMR! :) I do have a friend now who has offered to vaccinate my birds when he does his so, the cost is not an issue.
MsPigeon Posted November 9, 2005 Author Report Posted November 9, 2005 No speedbird, IU do not race across the channel, I live in the USA. We do not as yet have any rules requiring us to vaccinate birds in order to race. But many fanciers do. I have not vaccinated in the past but was concidering it. Thus I wanted to get some more opinions from all of you. Carol
PIGEON_MAN Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 HEAR WHAT YOU SAY PECKEDHEN AND BASICALLY AGREE ONLY INJECT MINE BECAUSE I HAVE TO PROBABLE WOULDN,T DO IT IF I HAD THE CHOICE.IKNOW SOME FANCIERS WHO INJECT FOR PIGEON POX BUT CHOSE NOT TO MYSELF AS I SAID BEFORE NOT CERTAIN WEATHER INJECTING EVERY YEAR IS INFACT DOING THE BIRDS ANY GOOD.HAD ANY MORE OF YOUR WHITE ONES RETURN.
Guest WINGS 04 Posted November 9, 2005 Report Posted November 9, 2005 only for para but the birds should only need one as i think it brings down the aimmume system in older birds
jimmy white Posted November 10, 2005 Report Posted November 10, 2005 we have to vaccinate them , but have to agree with silverwings earlier on, its very easy to get a "bad" batch, and theres no way we have of knowing that, we just pay our money and take our chance, or rather they take our money , and we take the chance. and as wings said, i dont think they need , all this vaccination ,every year, i think after being vaccinated as ybs,, each year , half the dose would do. but were forced to do it so theres no argument. money talks,,,,,,it says goodbye ;D ;D ;D
Chatrace Posted December 4, 2005 Report Posted December 4, 2005 I PMV all Ybs and POX them. In the Fall about 30 days before breeding setup I PMV everything including the YBs and droppers
fjwrt Posted December 30, 2005 Report Posted December 30, 2005 We vaccinate adult birds once a year for paramyxo and paratyphoid. Young birds get two doses about one month apart. Young birds also get pox vaccine. We lost many birds to paramyxo before a good vaccine was available, we don't want to go throught that again
Guest speckled Posted December 31, 2005 Report Posted December 31, 2005 Vaccinate for PMV,all birds each year, dont like doing it each year, but thats the rules. Speckled.
Guest Posted January 1, 2006 Report Posted January 1, 2006 Vaccinate once a year for paramyxo. DEFRA requirement, but I wonder why it needs to be done annually? My layperson's understanding of vaccination is the body gets introduced to a tame version of the nastie, it attacks and 'kills' it and in doing so develops an immune system response that will do the same again when the real thing comes along.
snowy Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 yes, agree with bruno, like most vaccines, i thought once would have been enough.
Silverdale Lofts Posted January 2, 2006 Report Posted January 2, 2006 We must have been vacinating in the uk now for 25years if they are making millions out of the pigeon fancier dont think they will ever put a stop to it.
