Routine Treatments

During the young bird racing season what routine treatments do you use regularily to keep your birds in optimum health and peak condition ? I know some folk say that they never treat with anything at all, think that is not now an option as there is always something that young birds can pick up, so what do you use and how often ?

;)my youngbirds have garlic in the drinker on mondays , cider vinegar on wednesdays ,  multivit on thursdays if racing ? , and local honey on day of return from race .  every other day clean water . we had a discussion at the club a few weeks ago about youngbird sickness , only 3 fanciers in our club not had it over last 3 seasons , 2 old hands and me the novice , ?? conclusion all 3 use cider vinegar and garlic in drinker .    ;) ;)         andy

Same here, just Cider vinegar, garlic and probiotics, unless I notice something under the microscope. Ive had mine on deep litter and they have only had one spell were they looked like they were going to get YB sickness, but it dissappeared after a day, so ive concluded one or two had just picked up something in the garden. Im touching wood when I say the above, as YB sickness seems to appear very quickly without any prior drop in condition!!!

Think thats whats wrong with half the fanciers of today. They treat for this and that without knowing why they are doing it. Normally because someone else is doing it. Too many treatments have a detremental effect on the immune system.Leaving the birds more prone to infections. Garlic, cider vinegar, honey, all these things are fine because they are natural. IF THE BIRDS ARE ILL THEN TREAT ACCORDINLY NOT JUST FOR THE SAKE OF IT.

I use more or less the same system.

But i think i may have had youngbird sickness ,after asking advice on here Invincible spirit and Timbarra pointed it out to me .After talking to Spencer on the phone and following his advice i think i caught it just in time the birds are all looking good now.

I do believe Apple cider vinegar is great for keeping a lot of nasties at bay though and without it i reckon i may have had it a lot worse.

i believe if ur gonna get y/b sickness ur get it!, wether uve got cider vinegar or garlic in ur water, cider vinegar provides an acidity level in the body that most germs dont like being in, many people believe that y/b sickness...(ADENOVIRUS) kills the birds but its the secondary infection(e coli) brought on through imunity breakdown ,that kills the birds......REMEMBER old birds can catch y/b sickness too!, but have a stronger imune system to control any infection brought on by it.

some may say wots he on about o/bs have it too?...but believe me its true!

if i remember correctly, ADENOVIRUS was 1st discovered in y/bs ...hence the name  y/b sickness.

dont think im any athority on it....just got a good memory for reading.. :D :D :Dpaul

I agree only fix whats broken or mend whats threatening, do you treat your kids with all these remedies or do you wait till some things wrong or threatening, Immunise for the biggies of coarse and good hygene standards, let the anti bodies do their job.

Probiotics are good especially after antibiotics, antibiotics don't differentiate between good and bad bacteria, probiotics replace the good ones

i would now treat yb,s for cocci,,,worms,, and canker [advice from a good avian vet ] but as old birds would be more inclined to have their droppings tested periodically  [they should have more natural immunity ] on the antibiotics scene , would tend to seek good avian vetenary advice  :)

cannot speak on behalf of jimy but my view would be that, young birds natural immunity levels are alot lower then an old birds. Also to add young birds will pick at anything and eat anything there very inquisitive creatures, so would be more prone to picking things up around the yard. But like jimmy said vetinery advice is always the right way to go!

i would do this nowadays, as opposed to years ago :),, as wily says yb,s are prone to picking at anything [inc droppings] their immunity system  has not yet developed properly , so as they grow , they need to grow in good health to make strong obs , then their immunity system should have a better grip [to the bird with the stronger inbred constitution]

;) thanks for the reply Wiley and Jimmy . i understand what youre saying , but another question is , surely they will build up their own natural immunity regardless ?? wont they ?. Remember the kids with the dirtiest hands in the biscuit barrel rarely off school with a cold ?????                     andy
