DJ Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 ive just started my birds on a canker treatment called chevi-col (dimetridazole) i think i read something in a pigeon weekly a couple of months back about having to remove all grit/minerals from the loft while treating for canker? is that right? can anybody advise me? debbie :-/
sapper756 Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Can,t say I,ve heard that, I never remove them when treating, however that does not mean it is not recomended
hepste Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 Debbie, I understand that calcium (contained in grit and minerals) negates the positive effects of antibiotics. I understand that dimetridazole is an antibiotic, so you would be correct in having concerns.
Guest IB Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 There was advice given on the forum a while back that one class of antibiotic - tetracyclines - has an affinity for calcium (calcium is in the grit and in the minerals). The drug binds with this calcium and this stops it entering the birds system. Your instructions should include a list of 'do and donts'.
DJ Posted May 10, 2008 Author Report Posted May 10, 2008 thanks everyone 4 the replies the instructions refer to dosage, it also states that its not known to interact with other meds, can show signs of paralysis and gagging in yb,s on 4/5th day of treatment wouldnt the manufacturers state if grit/minerals affected the treatment? debbie :-/

REGARDS GER
Guest Greig the doo Drysdale Posted May 11, 2008 Report Posted May 11, 2008 I heard you must take all grit and minerals away when giving any sort of medication. Wont do them any harm taking it away for a day or two

Guest IB Posted May 11, 2008 Report Posted May 11, 2008 debbie i believe that you are suppose to remove grit/mnerals when treating for respiratory!!!!! never heard of removing it for canker treatment............... now in saying that it wouldn't do any harm to remove it whilst treating them for canker but it is a MUST while treating for respiratory an this is a FACT....... REGARDS GER Last year I was prescribed medication by Pigeon Health for a bacterial respiratory infection. There was no instruction to remove minerals or grit when medicating the birds. The removal of minerals and grit has to do with calcium stopping a particular medication working. So its the type of medication and nothing to do with the type of illness. Follow the instructions and you can't go wrong.
DJ Posted May 11, 2008 Author Report Posted May 11, 2008 the majority of you think its ok to carry on with the grit and minerals so thats what i will do thanks for letting me pick your brains (again) debbie

Wont do them any harm taking it away for a day or two Agree totally, when treating for anything you should just get into the routine of taking away grits and minerals as the calcium and other minerals can reduce effectiveness, you should also dechlorinate the water you mix any sort of drug or pro biotic even in ,[just let the water stand over night before putting the powder/whatever in]
jimmy white Posted May 11, 2008 Report Posted May 11, 2008 if you don't "emtryl" is an antibiotic then please tell us wot exactly it is!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-/ i always thought it woz! so did i actually , but acording to ,,,,,"notice of compliance" " products for vetenary use" brand name ,,,,,,,,,,emtryl source..................rhone-poulenc. animal nutrition active ingredient ...dimetridazol therapeutic class ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,",antibacterial" as opposed to baytrill ,, on the same ,,,,,,,,,",products for vetenary use",,,,,,,,,,therapeutic class,,,,,,,,,",antibiotic" but i have to say, i allways thought emtryl an antibiotic, similar to flagyl
