I think this product was marketed as Harkanker (spelt with a k I think) years ago. Small red capsules in a very small red container. This was withdrawn either because it was ineffective or legislation restricted it's use.

I am interested why it is required surely there are more effective substitutes available.

i can,t see any significant use for this product to be used in pigeons, users beware i think I.B. would like to get his little fingers in to this one me thinks  :-/ :-/ :-/

Saw this thread go up  and thought, I've never heard of it.  :)

Interesting though that it appears that it was once used in pigeons, if Jimmy and others are correct that it was the active ingredient in Harkanker because the UK Harkanker license was suspended on 10.10.05 (VMD website) and that itself should sound warning bells that there is something far wrong with it.

Working backwards from the active ingredient  ;D turned up 4 'Brand Names' :- Enheptin, Entramin, Nitramin, Nitramine - but nothing at all on them except none of them are authorised for use in the UK (VMD website) though there are very brief mentions of them:-

‘treated with the formerly used anti-canker drug Enheptin’, (Gordon Chalmers Article on Canker).

‘Flagyl, Spartrix, Metronidazole, Entramin, Emtryl (encourages the lesions to drop off), or Carnidazole (or, less preferred, Enheptin) are typically prescribed for this. (Raptor Site on disease treatment (Frounce aka Canker)

So agree with you - users beware.

:)  Thanks for all of your replies.  Yes it's used for treating canker and I read about it in an 'Old Hand' book.  Doesn't look very promising judging by your replies.  Rembrandt2coo - don't understand - sorry!

Remember that Old Hand was writing yonks ago; for example you could also have read recommendations about using DDT insectide on the loft and birds - this stuff has also been banned for yonks  :)

IB many years ago the use of DDT was blamed for the decline in the numbers of birds of prey. Now there's a thought.

:)  The copy I have is "The Ailments and Diseases of the Racing Pigeon and How to Treat Them."  The copy was updated in 1993 but as you say things get banned etc etc.
