hi I have been following on pottasium permanganate and other treatment for the control of lice and I did a google search and came across a poultry site that recommends sodium fluoride and I was wondering if anyone on this site may have used it micko

Lice will not trouble the poultryman who practices the “clean-up measures’’ previously outlined, At the present time sodium fluoride seems t o be the best general remedy. Bishopp and Wood recommend dipping the birds in a solution of sodium fluoride as follows: The dip is made in a tub in the proportion of one ounce of the commercial, or two-thirds ounce of chemically pure sodium fluoride to each gallon of water. The bird is held by the wings with one hand and submerged in the solution; the other hand is used to ruffle the feathers and wet the body. Finally, duck the head of the bird a few times, drain for a few seconds, and release. One pound of sodium fluoride will be enough to treat 300 hens when using the dip method.

Its the controversial stuff added to most UK public drinking water supplies - except here in Scotland where a ban on its use was imposed by the Scottish Government.

Can't see an insecticidal use for it, always thought it was antimicrobial.

Not nice stuff. Hazard details at:

i have found that cypermethrin  wash [deosect] is one of the cheapest and best ways to rid pigeon lice, mixing 10ml in 500ml of water and spraying the birds nestpans etc directly ,, a 100ml bottle made up for me [including gloves :)] cost me £6,,,,,  would spray a lot of birds 5,000 mls of solution  :)
