Guest bristolkev Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 for the last 2 days i noticed 2 of my birds had lost their appetite at feeding time.when i picked them up both their crops were full of water.i don`t know if i did the right thing but i gentley squeezed the water from their crops and they seemed ok.today i found both of these birds dead, these are old birds so it can`t be youngbird sickness can it?.over the last couple of days i have found mouse droppings in the feeding tray, could them eating the droppings be the cause of this.i have 2 lofts and this is only happening in 1 loft and the other loft is fine. any ideas? cheers kev
phillips Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 sounds like salmanella mate e.coli remove all your feed trays ect and give a good clean never heard ov them dying though mate ?
Guest shadow Posted January 19, 2008 Report Posted January 19, 2008 could be them eating the corn contaminated by the mice never leave your feeders on the floor or anywhere with corn in keep an eye on the others and if any more die have a postmortem done mice carry all sorts of diseases
Guest j.bamling Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 were the 2 birds that died injected for paramixo virus ?
REDCHEQHEN Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 I thought drinking excessively was associated with coccidiosis? Agree mice spread salmonella through contaminated feed and PMV also possible and birds DO die from salmonella I would see a vet if poss even though your other birds may look OK at the moment - they probably won't be
Guest IB Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 Made same mistake as youreself last year on the feeding front. Don't leave it down overnight, and make sure everything you store it in is insect and rodent-proof. Mine are bins with lockable lids, and my wife gave me tupperware tubs with lids. So first and foremost find out how they are getting in and stop it off. Any gap bigger than 1/4 inch is fair game. Remember they climb. I've also got all the 'holes' down to less than 1/4 inch by crumpling / folding wire mesh, and stuffing it into gaps. I also bagged my one mouse using a tunnel baited trap in the corner where it was hiding its stash. I've still got baited traps down where the birds can't reach, and I've 2 ultrasonic rodent chasers fitted too. One of the problems with mice is that they don't leave litte puddles in one corner - they spray, so there's droplets of urine everywhere. And they don't only eat, they drink too. So you have a massive clean-up job. I'd be inclined to do a Domestos + really hot water job on all surfaces, and then disinfect them - spray with something like Virkon or Vanodine V18. Vanodine V18 is only disinfectant which specifically says it can go in the drinking water. It's an iodine-based disinfectant that kills salmonella and e. coli. Costs about £7 from Pigeon Pharmacy, but at 1 part to 1500 parts water, it lasts ages. I bought mine 2005/2006? I do the clubs baskets and my loft with it, and I have still got about 1/4 left and it's still within date - May 2008. I'd get that in the drinking water until you have definitely stopped the mice getting in. I think your problem is down to rodents, but as the other members say, as soon as another bird takes ill or dies, get it down to a vet - find out for sure what is going on.
Guest blythy1 Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 if i was you mate i would ring retford poultry on 01777 703011. they are very good and they will tell you what to do. dont treat for some thing if your not sure mate
jimbobboy Posted January 20, 2008 Report Posted January 20, 2008 Sounds like sour crop, I think now it would be salmonella. jimbobboy
MsPigeon Posted January 23, 2008 Report Posted January 23, 2008 I'm sure it's probably too late now, but I would suggest in the future to look to the birds for more symtoms so as to confirm diagnosis. Open their mouth and smell, and check for any growth of white or yellow in throat. Also seperate and check their droppings. If you don't have a microscope you can still tell a lot by the way the droppings look. Yours in the sport. Carol
timbarra Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 its salmonella due to mice urinem baytril at 5ml at 10% solution for 5 days and clean everything.
Shogun Posted March 9, 2008 Report Posted March 9, 2008 your feed or drinking water is contaminated with mice urine. could be leptospirosis(did I spell it right). open the dead birds and you will see their ruptured livers. gudluk
