I have Ornithosis in my pigeons and have obtained some Aureomycin Soluble Powder to treat them. I have read conflicting reports of dosage and length of time for treatment. I have read in some reports treatment should be 1 teaspoon / per gallon for 7 days. Another stating 3 teaspoon per / gallon for 7-14 days and then another stating they should be treated with the Aureomycin for 30-60 days but with no dosage details? I am confused to what dosage to give them. The vet I obtained it from didnt really know the dosage and just put as directed on the tub of product.

It looks as if comes in different strengths hence the different treatment plans.

Aureomycin Concentrate – Soluble powder. Chlortetracycline hydrochloride. Water soluble antibiotic for the treatment of chronic respiratory disease and air sac infection, infectious sinusitis and young bird mortality. Has proven to be somewhat effective against salmonella. Mostly used as a supplemental product with Tylan for respiratory problems.

Aureomycin-Sulmet – Soluble powder. Chlortetracycline bisulfate plus sulfamethazine bisulfate. Water soluble antibacterial/antibiotic combination for prevention and treatment of bacterial enteritis. A combination treatment for coccidiosis, bacterial pneumonia, chronic respiratory disease, infectious sinusitis and young bird mortality.

Terramycin Soluble Powder – regular strength. An oxytetracycline hydrochloride water-soluble antibiotic for the prevention and treatment of chronic respiratory diseases such as fowl cholera, hexamitiasis and infectious sinusitis. Reduces squab mortality and stress.

When I research Ornithosis it recommends 30-60 days treatment. But when I research the Aureomycin product it recommends 7 days with 1 teaspoon per gallon or 7 days with 3 teaspoons per gallon! Crazy!!!!!

you will not cure ornithosis in 7 days, the best known product to treat this is tetracycline.

remember...humans can catch this from the birds!

i have researched this over time and  mainly because i was wrongly told my birds had it a few years back.

which resulted in me packing in the sport.

only to find 3 months later that it wasnt ornithosis.

respiratory diseases are more widely common then most would have you believe.

i read a report stating that in germany it is rife...but controlled by medicating.

I decided to treat with the Aueromycin afterwards. I put 3 heaped teaspoons into 4 litres of water. The birds have been having it now for 5 days. The difference is incredible. The birds are bouncing! They are full of life compared to 5 days ago when they were lethagic and uninterested and panting. I was a little concerned with treating given that I had youngsters in the nest, but they are fine. I am going to continue treating for a further 8 days, so that will be 14 days in total.

Like Paul says it takes a long time to cure and will be interesting to see how your birds are after treatment.

What aftercare did your vet prescribe?

:-/ THE BEST TREATMENT FOR THIS IS TO FIND OUT WHY THEY HAVE IT IN THE FIRST PLACE,YOU CAN GIVE THEM AS MUCH TREATMENT AS YOU WONT,BUT WHAT HAS COURSED IT ::).
