Newbie2020 Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 A few of my pigeons have sections of the flight missing. Its looks as if something has been nibbling away at the flights. Also the birds are forever trying to peck the top of the throat and breast area although the feathers look ok. I have sprayed the birds with spray but doesnt seemed to have cured the problem. Any suggestions if this could be some type of lice? Also now and again the birds jump as if something is irritating there feet. I have looked and cant seen anything on any of the birds. They did have some lice which were visable but the spray seems to have cleared this type. Any advice on how to treat the birds would be most welcome.

OLDYELLOW Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 as it starts getting dark outside and the birds are settling down if you can here the birds thumping there legs then there are mites present , missing ends of flytes soundas more like damage from wire or widowhood fronts

Guest Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 Nibbled flights a sign of moths (or damage). Stamping feet and scratching sign of mites. Need to treat whole loft as well as birds, blow torch best followed by Nippon ant powder or any powder with permethrin in (make sure birds cant peck at it).
Guest IB Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 Wondered if bits missing from flights are caused by fret marks? Either the top end of the flight breaks off completely, or 'V' -shaped bit falls out. Look at break and you may see a faint pale line running across feather. Basically a past problem when the feather growth was checked (stress). A new feather will replace it at next moult. Make sure your birds get a weekly bath. There's stuff you can add to it to clear all mites & lice and which also helps to keep them at bay. Think you can safely discount moths. Common belief, but mistaken as moths don't have biting or chewing mouth parts. Damage to clothes etc is caused by their grubs which hatch from the eggs moths lay. Can't see any sort of grub lasting long in a loft full of pigeons.

allenyeates Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 Blow torch is best weapon we have, but be carefull not to set loft alight.!!!! I would dip birds(plenty of dips available) then blow torch the whole set up.

Is this the product best suited for clearing this trouble up. I have been informed even if not mites, will worm the pigeons anyway the same time.....sounds promising anyway!

There are ivermectin products for pigeons out there too. I think that is always the problem when using products not meant for pigeons on pigeons, you risk overdosing them.
