YOUNG BIRD SICKNESS

Recommended Posts

Posted

You will notice one or perhaps two of your young are not as alert as the others they are slow to eat and in the north east theres a saying when playing drafts its called huff man.The poorly young go into a huff there shoulders are up and bodies down. If you tackle the problem at this time it will not get a good hold.Go to Holland and Barratts and buy Acidophillus caps give one to the ill birds mostly they will be well after one dose however if not give a second cap the second day, almost sure to be cured however the third cap day three none remain ill after that. YBS or crop packing syndrome is curable and the young can race and win.

Never heard of Acidophilus, had a look on google,

seems to be good stuff.

A natural product for yeast infections cant be bad. anyway this is what is on the net.

Thanks Clayton

The term acidophilus is used to describe a number of bacteria which help in human digestion. These bacteria include L. acidophilus, L. casei, L. bulgaricus, among others. Lactobacilus acidophilus is one of the bacteria found in these mixtures, but the term acidophilus usually refers to a combination of L. acidophilus with other beneficial bacteria.

Acidophilus is touted for its many health benefits, some of which have been known about for thousands of years. The bacteria is found naturally throughout the human body, and most likely made its way into a food long ago, beginning a cycle of natural fermentation which people eventually learned to artificially duplicate.

When acidophilus are placed in a sugar-rich environment, they begin to eat the sugars they find there. They then convert these sugars into various things, including lactic acid. This adds a distinctive taste, and lowers the pH of the food or liquid so that other flora do not find it as friendly an environment, helping to preserve the food. Yogurt is probably the most well-known of foods that make use of acidophilus, and it is very easy to notice the sour taste of the lactic acid when eating this food. Other foods that contain acidophilus include sauerkraut, kombucha, kinchi, kefir, and many other fermented food products.

Acidophilus can help protect the body against harmful bacteria, parasites, and other organisms. As it breaks down, it releases things such as hydrogen peroxide that create a toxic environment for unhealthy creatures in the body, helping to drive them out. It also plays an important role in digestion, helping to produce a number of chemicals which aid in the digestion process.

Many alternative modalities of healing look to acidophilus for a wide range of health benefits. In addition to basic digestive assistance, acidophilus is thought to help bolster the immune system as a whole. It is also thought to provide some relief from intestinal problems, such as diarrhea.

The fungal infection of Candida albicans, more commonly referred to as a yeast infection when it affects the genital area, is thought by some to be controlled by acidophilus. Since acidophilus occurs naturally in the genitals, and plays a role in warding off such infections, some people advocate topical treatment. The topical application of yogurt, which contains acidophilus, is thought by many to help relieve and ultimately cure a yeast infection. Oral ingestion is also recommended, either of yogurt, or of an acidophilus supplement.

Because antibiotics kill the so-called probiotics, such as acidophilus, as well as harmful bacteria, many people feel that an antibiotic regime can lead to outbreaks of numerous problems, including yeast infections. It is recommended by many to take supplements of acidophilus and eat acidophilus-rich foods for a period of time after completing a regimen of antibiotics.

I have not had this for years, however this year I had a brand new loft.

First thing a clubmate said to me is I will get it due to the new wood and sterile condition of the new wood.

Sure enough, two today still have the corn in the crop from Yesterday, and are sitting huffed up.

I have put some Xereck in the water and will now leave them to it.

As Rene used to say " i shall say this only once....", but have said it before..... some read past, some use it, OREGANO, especially as oil.

Use it see if you get YBS. See what all the good anti YBS supps have them (orego stim, ropaidair etc), coincidence, i can tell you absolutely not!

I doubt it was YBS then Mark.

i can gaurntee it was..

Mark, i dont think anyone can really guarantee that they have YBS as no one seems to know what it is. The YBS i know of will be held at bay by using oregano and a few other things (non-medicinal), but should these not work then i'd say it is probably something more than YBS. Your the first person i know that Ropadair not worked for, but there are probably a few more (or will be lol).

How many have their birds tested when they have "YBS" and if they do i wonder what the results are. The term also seems to cover a wide variety of symptons.

a tea spoon of beach in the water ;) ..3 pint drinker.

belgamco is another good product..

all ill say on ybs...get your treatments in NOW!...or suffer hanging about for companies etc to send it to you ;)

timing is crucial..like anything else..catch it early enough and its easier to treat.

some will say dont use meds ..but i will in the right proportion and not over do them. ;)..too much can be as bad as too little!

most fanciers can reconise the symptons and a hell o alot can not but if u have problems u must starve for 24 hrs use de-weert 4in1 as directed for 7 days and they will be ok to win races is entirely down to u

CAN YOUNG BIRDS THAT HAVE RECOVERED FROM YOUNG BIRD SICKNESS,STILL COMPETE WITH THE YOUNG BIRDS THAT HAVE NEVER HAD THE YOUNG BIRD SICKNESS,OR ARE THEY AT A SLIGHT DISADVANTAGE.

i had that in my loft last year and i must admit that the birds who were ill and recovered seem better and stronger for it.but each bird is different.i personally dont think that your birds are at a disadvantage,as long as their fit and well now theres no reason why they cant give the others a run for their money.

THEY GET OVER IT SOON ENOUGH IF YOU LOOK AFTER THEM RIGHT AND WILL WIN AGAIN A FEW WEEKS LATER  ;)

Posted

I, like a lot of others used to get YBS every year. I have had them dead on the floor in the mornings and had them wasting away and dying after weeks. I have tried just about every type of cure and fad there has been. Then I woke up.

The loft has to be very well ventilated and totally dry. You then get the birds on to deep litter which is moved twice every day without fail. A small amount of apple cider vinegar in the water every day. Wash the drinkers and feed troughs in distinfectant regularly. You do this to avoid worms, cocci and canker becoming a problem.

Then kill any bird that goes down with it and only breed from proven performance birds. Yes, birds will win from lofts that have had it, and occasionally birds that have recovered will go on to win. But in a great many cases, there will be kidney damage and the bird will always be a weak specimen.

By the way, since adopting the above regime, I have reduced the problem to almost nil. I say almost nil because I am always looking for weak birds and when I find them they are gone.

I've been using yogurt for years and that has not stopped mine getting YBS. A table spoon full of household bleach in the drinker after the first two races did though. ;)

SORRY PP BUT BLEACH LIKE YOGURT WON'T STOP YB SICKNESS  IT MAY STOP BACTERIAL CROSS INFECTION VIA THE DRINKER BUT YB SICKNESS IS A VIRUS
