chickadee Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 hi the reason i want to is so i can keep them on the garlic most of the week and use the soda to prevent canker Thanks. I have never used bicarbonate of soda in the drinkers unless to clean them but never to prevent canker, I can safely say we have never had any problems with canker. I only use cider vinegar, garlic, honey, orego stym, devils claw, elder berry, nettle tea in my drinkers. I do use BS for a lot of uses around the house, cleaning drains etc :-/
Novice Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 Interesting combination let us know how you get on. I think Garlic solution may be acidic but whether or not it is acidic enough to react with the Bicarb. I could not be sure.
Guest triballofts Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 hi how i use garlic is to put 3 cloves in the drinker and leave them there so was just going to use the soda once a week but i useally use the garlic 7 days

Guest IB Posted August 26, 2009 Report Posted August 26, 2009 Tried to find out a while back if garlic was acid or alkaline. I know that the antimicrobial properties are said to be present in 'alkaloids' but some are acid, others are alkaline. Found this website which gives a listing of acid and alkaline foods, garlic is alkaline. So maybes OK with bicarbonate, also alkaline, not such a good idea with cider vinegar, an acid? http://www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm
