ron123 Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 hi new this year my birds are going through a heavy moult and was told to use butter milk has anybody tried this to speed moult up?
ron123 Posted October 22, 2009 Author Report Posted October 22, 2009 yes cool will try it for a while how much you use at any one time.
Guest frank dooman Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 where do you buy it jimmy and how much and any particular brand/name
jimmy white Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 just ordinary buttermilk from sainsburies ,, about double the size of a tub of yogurt,, i put about two tablespoons in their water,, it does seem to accelerate the moult,, i broke some darkness ones, , their now almost throwing two flights at once , this along with plenty baths seems to work well
Guest frank dooman Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 thats what iam thinking about jimmy what about the old birds that are nearly through the moult will it harm they and how many days in the drinker??
jimmy white Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 thats what iam thinking about jimmy what about the old birds that are nearly through the moult will it harm they and how many days in the drinker?? i put it in the drinker almost every day, maybe missing the odd day [really because ive forgot or run out lol] seems to do the birds no harm, even the old birds have that silky plyable [if thats the word] feathering ,rather than that dry sort of feathering
ron123 Posted October 22, 2009 Author Report Posted October 22, 2009 thanks mate all sorted now glad at least one person uses it.
Guest Freebird Posted October 22, 2009 Report Posted October 22, 2009 Dont want to spoil the party but I have birds bred in may now throwing three flight ( catch up ) without buttermilk. Just good grub and fresh water. Not knocking it but just giving facts. Why try to speed up, just let nature take it's cource. p.s. I do not use light in loft although I do have them for emergency.
Guest Davy Fleming Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 THANKS Jimmy will give it a g ;)o Cheers mate
Shortcut Lofts Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Have tried it but i found that if you put oils on the corn every 2 days they do just the same and throw flights in doubles. Plus imo the oils have more in them that benefit the pigeons. SL
shweet Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 How long do you put the buttermilk in the water for thanks ?
Shortcut Lofts Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 How long do you put the buttermilk in the water for thanks ? I used it every other day.
Shortcut Lofts Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Until the last flight is cast then stop. SL
Craig05 Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Why not just let them moult on their own??
pjc Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 Why not just let them moult on their own?? if they are latter bred or left on darkness to long they may not moult the end flights which will not benefit them next year. Also there is a chance that when they throw there 1st flight next year they will also throw the next unmoulted baby flight preventing them from being raced.
shweet Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 I am new to the game and have a lot to learn. Can you tell me please which flight is the last one that they moult out. Thankyou.
pjc Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 They moult the primary flight from shortest to longest, going away from the body and when they get to the last three longest flights the birds wing may be sore and they won't want to fly as much which is why people don't want birds at that stage in the moult during racing.
ritchie1 Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 yes put them on it for 9 days works great went straight in to the moult after 5 days

Got you, i still think we mess around with nature too much. thanks for the info

ritchie1 Posted October 23, 2009 Report Posted October 23, 2009 yes true but theres no harm than giving them a help to start off the birds are looking good with it all the same
