Hello everyone

to be able to see if a bird has  worms /cocci  do i need to mix the droppings sample with anything ..........thank you

Yes !!!!!!!!!! I think a salt solution is best but many just use water etc, one thing to remember thou, with worms allow at least 20 to 30 minutes for the worm eggs to float to the top type thing on the slide. Also, always take your sample late in the afternoon etc, especially for for cocci as that is when they are more frequent etc.

Enjoy.

Hi

the best way to test droppings is as follows:-

collect droppings, late afternoon is best. Try to avoid the urates, (the white bits).

mix together and take about 2 1/2 mls (half a teaspoon) . (I roughly measure the quantity for consistancy of results).

mix with flotation liquid pour into test tube or similar sized container and top up until the liquid is standing proud of the container.

carefully place a cover slip on top and leave for about 30 minutes.

the nasties will have floated to the top in that time.

floatation liquid is either purchased from Brunell or you can make your own.

Boil water in saucepan, half full for safety, add common salt until it will not disolve any more. It is now a saturated saly solution.

Cool it and it is perfectly OK. (you can use sugar but I find it much too sticky)

Brunell supply cover slips, slides and test tubes by return of post if you want them.
