Guest Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Isn't it true that if you take your boots when you're going to a Gillingham game, you'll get a game if the other players haven't turned up, <VBG>
westburylofts Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 CAN ONLY GET A GAME IF YOU HAVE A ZIMMER FRAME, LOL.
snowy Posted March 8, 2006 Author Report Posted March 8, 2006 thanks to silverdale lofts for testing droppings that westy sent him, found coci in troubled hen, the rest he hasnt tested yet. thanks & much appreciated all of you
MsPigeon Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Snowy, I just use 5 in 1 from Vita King. I use it before race and breeding season to knock the bugs out before they are under stress. It was most likely the stress of rearing that caused the flare up. If it is happening in breeding season it will probably happen under the stress of raceing as well. But since you know it is cocci I would look at that list that Speight posted some time ago with all the meds and dosages and percautions and side effects and all that. Chose the one thats best for your situation. Some are safe durring breeding season. Yours in the sport. Carol
ribble Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 mike, apologies not needed, had the courier next to me. snowy, most pigeon stores wiil have appertex it should do the job.

Guest shadow Posted March 9, 2006 Report Posted March 9, 2006 If its a very good pigeon dose it if not dispose of it, good pigeons never get ill. "Shadowood Lofts"
ribble Posted March 9, 2006 Report Posted March 9, 2006 bingo.......MIKE...u been on GARLIC...or what....
Mike Lycett Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 F*cking GARLIC ?? ;D ;D You're trying to get me into trouble Ribble!!! Still Boinging Mike
Guest Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 Hi Snowy You have had a lot of different ideas as to what is wrong with your hen.My guess is that she has a 'worm infestation' A droppings test by your vet will tell you what the problem is. Why i say that she is still eating and feeding the young bird, Worms take all the nourishment before the pigeon gets it However we are only going on what we think a vet will tell you what it i Ex_Pat
jimmy white Posted March 10, 2006 Report Posted March 10, 2006 treat, treat , treat,,,, the dropping sample should let you know if the worm count is high, or the cocci count is high,or how much canker is present but the test for salmonella[ paratyphus] takes a bit longer, and is more difficult to diagnose i hate saying this to new fanciers, but would agree with shadow,
snowy Posted March 11, 2006 Author Report Posted March 11, 2006 thanks again all, had dropings tested for everything, & found out the problem was canker, my inexperience didnt spot it by looking down throat, but a friend/fancier(silverwings) checked the breast bone under the feathers, and clearly showed me canker. thank you very much all, for your advice, & help snowy
Guest Posted March 11, 2006 Report Posted March 11, 2006 If its a very good pigeon dose it if not dispose of it, good pigeons never get ill. "Shadowood Lofts" Was at a Fed Moot last night and asked Dr Phil Lynch, good SNFC results into central Scotland (Stenhousemuir, Falkirk) about the G-WORD and his full reply included your own advice, Shadow. Dr Lynch believes GARLIC works as a preventative in that it works with the birds immune system, rather than doing the job that the immune system should be doing in keeping normal stuff like canker, cocci and worms at low levels. And he believes the immune system needs exposure to low levels to develop proper immunity, so his young birds get nothing. He doesn't treat OBs before the racing, or during racing but should anything appear amiss September time, after the racing ends, he'll test and decide accordingly - if the bird's done something wortwhile he'll medicate, if not he'll Gamma-tab it into the bin. At the same moot, John Duthie also good SNFC results into north Scotland (Dundee)described a visit to Armand Scheer's lofts, the Belgian vet / pigeon fancier and National winner. (It was Armand Scheer's remarks in his video 'Keep em Healthy' about garlic's effects on COCCI that first sparked me into doing some research into garlic, not in newspapers, not pigeon books or magazines, but scientific research papers and sources that could be relied upon to give FACT, not fiction or hearsay). Jock described 'seein rats runnin up and doon the wires and going thro holes in the wire into the lofts'. As we wur lookin at the birds the rats wur lookin at us lookin at the birds. And the sh** was sky-high. The birds were sitting on mountains of sh** on the perches." From that description I'd say these birds had cast-iron consitutions and even paratyphoid wasn't a concern... And Gordon Chalmers also believes GARLIC to be a preventative ... over the long term. So its not just me that's saying it ... its people that actually know what they are talking about that are saying it .. garlic works.
Mike Lycett Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 Funny that - Gord & I exchange mails on a daily basis and have done over the last few years. We have a clear understanding of each other. The words of advice from great winning fanciers are always most keenly digested in my opinion. I'd agree with Shadow - I wouldn't have treated it in our loft. But I wasn't asked if I'd keep it - I was asked how to treat the problem. I'll not advise anybody to cull their own birds. If someone asked me what would I do - then that's a different thing altogether
Guest Silverwings Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 Mike and Bruno , this might be a good time to let go of the 'G' words GAMBA v GARLIC both being exelent remedies in their own right , and both relevent in the solution of this particular problem ,although we can all make an educated guess given symptoms via a computer screen ,we must not lose sight of the fact that Snowy and Martin are in,their first season in this noble sport and until last year, the best possible use for Garlic was 'Curry' and 'Gamba Tab' may well have been centre forward at the baggies , one thing is for sure is they do not need to see a lots of "no you do" and "yes you dont" posts from the likes of us ? what they do need ,is hands on advice in situations such as this ,in the past i have seen the so called cracks run a mile , other than visit the lofts of a novice with a problem!, reading through the posts on this particular thread ,if these lads were in our clubs think all of us on here would be forming a cue at their door to sort their problem ( Solidarity ) .........ray
jimmy white Posted March 12, 2006 Report Posted March 12, 2006 :) very well put silver wings, you seem to be a very understanding , sensible, and helpfull pigeon fancier :)
snowy Posted March 12, 2006 Author Report Posted March 12, 2006 silverwings, bruno, mike, silverdale lofts, jim, & everyone, thanks very much for your help, all was a lesson & learn to me, as ray said, this is our first year, & if it was not for all of you seriously, i wouldnt have started up with these gracious birds, & the advice on this forum, has been a god send, and at least now i have my first wee box of various medication for pigeons incase they get ill.
