Guest Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 Sorry Bruno I have to disagree with you in part. I would never take for granted that because one uses garlic you can disregard cocci, bacterial or viral diseases as a possible cause for an ailing pigeon. Garlic is good, but a preventative against all ? Not a preventative against all, but against all the stuff that it has been PROVED EFFECTIVE AGAINST, most of which is directly relevant to pigeon ailments, Tony. Have brought 'Garlic Raw' to the top of the Racing Pigeon Board. Few articles and advice in there. Fair bit of reading, but well worthwhile.
Tony C Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 Yes bruno it has been proved effective against many things, but at what dose?
Guest Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 Yes bruno it has been proved effective against many things, but at what dose? I use one bulb a week for my 30 pigeons, given over two consecutive days. Difficult to give a precise dose as my pairs are fed & watered in their boxes. Again, quantity difficult to describe: I simply cut each clove into about 3 pieces, crush a piece between two spoons and drop it into a jam-jar of fresh water. Real low-tek stuff I know, but in 17 months, not had a bird so much as off-colour, far less sick, achieved without the use of medicines of any kind, and at a staggering cost of 25p per week.
jimmy white Posted March 4, 2006 Report Posted March 4, 2006 " Paratyphoid just doesn't infect 'only one joint'; it infects the birds whole body. It also doesn't just infect one bird, it infects the whole flock ". youll find this not exactly true if youve ever had it, jimmy,,,silverwings bang on with his post
snowy Posted March 5, 2006 Author Report Posted March 5, 2006 think the fact the hen is strugling on her legs (lameness) suggests a leaning towards paratyphoid ,the vet seems to be spot on in my book ? if the problem was cocci the weight loss would have been rapid ,due to her feeding youngsters , make sure the hen gets a vitamin course after her treatment ,and check out contamination of your grain from rodents where you bourght it from ......ray does this mean i should treat the whole loft? & what about the youngbirds that are being reared? can i treat with baytril?
Silverdale Lofts Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Snowy look at this link will help you. http://www.pigeonjournal.com/content/view/20/26/ Also listen the the likes of the fanciers who are at the top of the game the likes of Silverwings who as flown for over 30 years Mike lycett who is one of the top flyers in the midlands and stop following a bloke who thinks garlic will cure or prevent anything hope you get your birds well but in my opinion they will be carries for life.
Tony C Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 snowy its hard for a good avian vet to tell you if your pigeon has paratyphoid or not, sometimes needing to test the pigeons droppings 3 times to come to a correct diagnosis. Posters on here can only suggest what your problem may be, that's all. My issue with this thread is that by using garlic you could give youself a false sense of security if you believe its a preventative against virus's, its not. Be forever on your guard and take nothing for granted.
Guest Silverwings Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 good tip on this thread from Mike Lycett ! speaking with some of the best flyers in our area lunchtime on those GAMBA-TABS a product from Rohnfried (used as a preventative for canker and cocci ) the lads in the Know say they are superb ,bring the pigeons into excelent condition ? can use them during racing , the difference is evident within 24 hours , (one for the notebook) ......ray
Silverdale Lofts Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Ray i would never be without them one of the best tablets on the market.
Guest Silverwings Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 thanks tom , will get some of these this week as a stand by ......ray

Pity you didn't read your own recommended link: Gordon Chalmers devotes most of Chapter 2, Paratyphoid treatment, to PROBIOTICS, lactobacteria and live natural yoghurt. Also he always talks about birds rather than bird. If as was suggested, contaminated corn was a factor, then as ALL the birds eat the same corn, I would have expected ALL the birds to be affected. They aren't. So that advice appears a blind alley that shouldn't have seen daylight. All 'the fanciers at the top of their game' gave Snowy & Westy, novices like myself, completely different diagnoses of what the problem was; my advice was simply this - first to support them in their decision to go to the vet; and second to point them towards possible answers in their own management - from what Snowy & Westy had told us previously elsewhere about that. It is always difficult for someone like me (a novice) to be given any sort of credibility by know-all-know-nothing people like yourself. But what shouldn't be difficult is to give me the same respect that I give others, including yourself, on this forum. Respect is supposed to be afforded to ALL members. Anything I say I can usually back-up, like for example passing on information from two excellent avian vets, including the one you belatedly referred to yourself, yet you suggest that I shouldn't be listened to. Your motives need a little close inspection, in my opinion they're highly suspect.
Silverdale Lofts Posted March 5, 2006 Report Posted March 5, 2006 Ok Bruno Know all know nothing people like yourself . Your motives need a little close inspection in my opinion they are highly suspect. Bruno all im going to say stay with your garlic and you will stay at the bottom of the race sheet every week.Thats my last post on the forum you cant teach a old dog new tricks.
Guest Silverwings Posted March 6, 2006 Report Posted March 6, 2006 its the same make up as gambakokzid thanks for the input Ribble thats the water soluble version i think , i am not up to scratch on all these ,new products , it looks as though i may need a crash course now though going to fly my second round at home this year, my old mate looks like he wants to go it alone ? applied to join a local club over the weekend being on the west side i may be lucky ? ............back to the post how is your hen snowy ?

Bruno all im going to say stay with your garlic and you will stay at the bottom of the race sheet every week.Thats my last post on the forum you cant teach a old dog new tricks. Had this board been about RACING and had I had the cheek to try and tell people how to race their pigeons your comments would have been fair. However, this board is about HEALTH and about all types of pigeons and of interest to all types of pigeon people. If you examine 'know-all-know-nothing' you will see that it is the opposite ends of a spectrum. Knowledge isn't the private property of a select few 'old dogs' as another tried to tell us in this thread, everyone on the forum knows something and can contribute something worthwhile. And 'old dogs' had better learn new tricks, because time and scientific knowledge is moving on..
Mike Lycett Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 Hi.. Would have to check me book, but going off memory I believe that the Gamba Tabs also control ingluvitis, whilst Gambakokzoid doesn't. Also, the fact you can drop a tablet into a particular pigeon's mouth without buggering around with the rest of the bunch means its a very useful tool to have in the cupboard. I'd certainly recommend their use. We've found them handy in the past, & I'm sure we'll find 'em handy in the future too! COME ON YOU BAGGIES ! Mike
Mike Lycett Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 Bruno Have to say that I agree with silverdale to a degree (my opinion). Garlic has its benefits. A bloke would be stupid NOT to acknowledge it. We use it at our lofts - in the right place at the right time. However, you couldn't pay me to use it for more than 6 weeks a year. To me, anything else is simply begging for trouble (in terms of racing performances). Our birds get well over 300 days a year of clear water, and that is absolurely CRITICAL. Mike
Guest Silverwings Posted March 7, 2006 Report Posted March 7, 2006 mike lycett ,what is this BOING BOING stuff ,hope you dont give it to your pigeons ? it will send them down ! , talking to some depressed baggie fans today ,they tell me BOING BOING is what ZEBEDEE used to do? i beleive he used to go up and down too ? one of them even suggested that it was some form of tribal chant used by the THOUSANDS of er ,er , ( Multi National Flying Club ) fans they have down the albion ? ( West Bromwich Talbion ) ... "COME ON YOU WOLVES" .....silverdingle
Mike Lycett Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Ribble - apologies. I did say "going off memory" - which is precisely why I write everything down! Now there's the best bit of advice I could give anyone!!! W*LVES !!!!! Dad used to take me down the Molineux as a nipper. I was originally brought up as a Wolves fan. Not many know that !!! Changed when I was about 9. Influenced by Regis, Cunningham etc.... I hope they go up to be honest. I'd like to see all the Midlands teams in the Promised Land. Unfortunately, I think either us or Blues will go down this year. UP THE BAGGIES ! Mike
Guest Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 This may be a silly question but who are the Baggies??? Lost touch with Football since I came here, have become a Baseball Hooligan instead <VBG>
Mike Lycett Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Hi Hyacinth Have you heard of Manchester United? Juventus? Barcelona? Real Madrid? Inter Milan? Chelsea, Liverpool? Arsenal? We're BIGGER than all them (West Bromwich albion has loads more letters in their name than them lot !!!) ;D ;D ;D Boing Boing Mike
Guest Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 Thanks Mike I used to be a diehard Blackburn Rovers Fan, gave it up though cause they never came to see me when I was bad. Must admit I'm a diehard Baseball fan now, what can be better than going to a game and being served BEER and all sorts of food while you're sat in your seat and having fun with the opposing teams supporters. GO SEATTLE MARINERS AND NEW YOUR YANKEES
westburylofts Posted March 8, 2006 Report Posted March 8, 2006 THAT IS RIGHT MIKE, YOU DO HAVE MORE LETTERS, IT IS THE ONLY CLUB I KNOW WHERE THE FANS ASK FOR A TRANSFER LOL SORRY MIKE COULD NOT LET THAT ONE GO, LOL LOL
