madas26 Posted July 24, 2006 Report Posted July 24, 2006 has anyone got any advice, noticed it yesterday, still feeding but looks sore
Guest shadow Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 It may look swollen if it's feeding young birds as some parents feed heavier than others.
T_T Posted July 26, 2006 Report Posted July 26, 2006 It could be the start of Pigeon Pox. It's not the end of the world should they catch it, although it dosn't look very nice. Let it run it's course through the loft and those that catch it ( should it be that of course, ) will be immune to any future outbreaks.
madas26 Posted July 27, 2006 Author Report Posted July 27, 2006 its this years bird shadow,i should of sent it last week racing but noticed this dont really wanna go to vets as they will charge me ££££ thanxs T_T u maybe right it doesnt look very nice,is there anything i should give it? also wots the cause?
Guest Posted July 27, 2006 Report Posted July 27, 2006 It would be helpful if you could get that pic uploaded. Your difficulty might be that the file is over 100kb. If it is, try loading it to Paint and saving as International JPG file, should be well under 100kb, and get it up so we can have a look at the problem bird. Pigeon pox isn't a trivial illness - its a contagious viral infection.
Guest CS Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 pic wont upload.... ;( Check your pm, Madas. please.
T_T Posted July 28, 2006 Report Posted July 28, 2006 Madas, If it is PP the swelling and soreness, will turn into crustations around the beak, eyes and head and also down their throats. There is a product ( sorry can't remember it's name but I'm sure that there are a few of the guys on here that can,) that you can paint on the infection. I think if I remember right it took some ten weeks to clear from my friends loft. A nasty looking ailment and one that must inflict extreme discomfort to the bird. I think one of the causes is over crowding, persistant fighting amongst the birds where they've no room to escape and inflicting injuries and open wounds to the eyes, beak, etc, inviting the infection to kick in.. I havn't seen any sign of it for 15 years. When I vaccinate, I always include the Pigeon Pox vaccine as well, saves any heartache because I've seen it in full flow..
madas26 Posted July 30, 2006 Author Report Posted July 30, 2006 wow its blown up like a balloon, made me go funny the poor thing cant eat now,so il have to pop to the vets first thing monday il email u pic CS see if u can upload
Guest shadow Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 That could be canker or pox try removing the scabs gently with a cotton bud then paint with iodine that should clear them up and try bicarbonate of soda in the drinker until you get some canker treatment
Guest Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 Thats an isolation job. Make sure it doesn't feed youngsters. Agree, professional opinion needed, definite vet job. Ain't never seen anything like it. Damned good picture.

Guest Posted July 30, 2006 Report Posted July 30, 2006 emailed your pigeon's pic to Gordon Chalmers and asked for views / opinion. This is his reply: "The photo suggests a few possiblities to me - one is a canker lesion (I've seen something similar before in this location), another is pox, a third is a tumour, and a fourth is a bacterial infection. Since birds don't produce pus as we know it, instead they do produce the cheesey type of reaction we see in canker, so I'd say any three of the four (probably excluding a tumour) I've thought of could be possibilities. I'd give preference to canker or pox. In a couple of other recent cases for clubmates, I've just lanced the area and expressed the contents - problem solved. Hope these few thoughts might help. If you learn what it really is, could you let me know, pls? Kindest regards, Gordon."
madas26 Posted July 31, 2006 Author Report Posted July 31, 2006 hey thanx bruno takin it to vets today at 4:30,so il let u all know how i get on

Guest Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Sorry to hear about the outcome. Did the vet say anything on what caused, or might have caused the tumour?
madas26 Posted July 31, 2006 Author Report Posted July 31, 2006 no the vet had never seen anything like it before, had to call another vet in for a second opinion. it had doubled in size since the pic also
Guest Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 Doubled in size in as many days? Nasty one, whatever it was. Thanks, madas. Will let Gordon Chalmers know.
Guest CS Posted July 31, 2006 Report Posted July 31, 2006 emailed your pigeon's pic to Colin Walker and asked for views / opinion. This is his reply: Craig, This bird has pigeon pox. If I can be of any further assistance you are more than welcome to phone. (03) 9800 5311. Regards, Dr. Colin Walker
jimmy white Posted August 2, 2006 Report Posted August 2, 2006 glad you got to the bottom of it, and sorry you lost the bird,, but it did seem a strange one that, i wouldbe keeping my eye on the rest of them, even allthough the vet says non contagious [ hope the rest are ok though]
