Guest strapper Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 hi i got a couple of birds gone really down and i had one die on sat symptoms watery droppings and one has yellow spots on the back of its throat awaiting delivery of canker and cocci treatment from everything for pets can anyone advise please hi ,have the birds or some been making a wheezing growling throaty noise?..if its severe canker then it will clog the thoat hence that noise . start treatment the day you get it...doesnt matter if its late afternoon. treat for canker but leave the cocci ,...have the birds dropped their end of their wings? possibly ruffled feathers.? also maybe heaving a little? hope you get it sorted.
OLDYELLOW Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 http://www.chevita.com/en/pigeons/symptoms/index.php
chico123 Posted December 2, 2008 Author Report Posted December 2, 2008 breathing ok but birds seem to have gone weak and are not eating right awaiting delivery of chevita hope it arrives in the morning
The Navigator Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 Get them tested, because it could be anything.
Guest IB Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 I don't think you can cure pigeons of an illness without first establishing what the illness is. I always understood canker and cocci to be secondary illnesses, that usually flare up when some other 'disease' is working on the bird. Maybe you'd best get someone round to check them out, but be prepared for advice that you may not wish to hear. Remember these sick birds are a danger to the other pigeons in your loft, so make sure they are seperated.
Guest bigda Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 mix up some bicarbonate of soda, just now if you have a syringe or get a straw and just dip the straw and hold with thumb and let it flow down the throat just to stave off the cocci from going into overdrive, and hand feed for the night till you can see in the morning, keep locked up sounds like ecoli salmonella the vet may give you baytil for this but will be worth getting sample diagnosed as amoxacillin sorts that type of symptom but make sure you hand feed about 25 beans or such just enough to keep the birds strength up doesn't matter if it sick just feed again :-/ :o
sammy Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 try some salt in the water might not cure the illness but will stop the watery droppings so they say anyhow
Guest shadow Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 get them tested do not try to second guess the small yellow spots at the back of the throat indicates some type of infection
mark croker Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 get them tested or get rid, the best thing is to keep them seperate, the canker more that likely is brought on be somthing else, i would go for baytril if that wont work if you try bicarbonate of soda mixed 50/50 with Andrews salts that will flush them though hope the get better
peterpau Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 Table spoon of cider vinegar or lemon juice with crushed garlic in the water just to stop it getting worse, then treat when you get your stuff. Don't know what your gonna use but coxoid in the water and single spartrix tablets together has no ill effects. I would be careful treating cocci and kanker at one time as you never know how two drugs together will react.
peterpau Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 I always treat cocci and kanker a week apart, I never seperate as other birds may look fine but still carry. E-coli and salmonella will respond to acidified water ie: cider vinegar or lemon juice.
Guest Silverwings Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 symptoms sound very much like some form of bacterial infection ? if this were the case the vet may advise amoxcillin ? it will help him if you tell him all the symptoms and anything unusual the have had access to , as other posts isolate them and sterilise all the drinkers and feed containers
kev01293 Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 i had some birds go down chico with the same symptons as yours but i was lucky enough to get some amoxillin from somewhere that sorted them out but otherwise i would go with what the experienced fanciers on here reccomend ps u would be suprised what family/friends have sitting in their medicine cabinets
jimmy white Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 would most certainly have the birds checked out by a good avian vet,,, hope this is diagnosed very quickly , as this could be one of many things,, hope things work out for you,
phillips Posted December 2, 2008 Report Posted December 2, 2008 i wouldnt be certain mate but to me it sounds like streppta cocci ? not sure how to spell ? can yoou post any pics of birds or dropping ect pm me may be able to put you on the right track cheers jason
