maybe as strays they have to fly and forage for feed every day and that could mean tyere fittier than your birds and also out in the open air instead of shutup in a shed most of the time,,,,think about it !!!!!!   :)

i had something similar last weekend, let the birds out for exercise and one came back an hour later than the others. Its flights were covered in dark looking marks, which were easily seen because all my birds are white. no marks on any other feathers. whilst i'll never know what caused it i have concluded the bird must have flown or landed somewhere it couldnt initially get out of, my initial thought was a chimney pot, and as it has flapped to get out, it's flights have got dirty.

just an idea

curling is only one small paRT TO GIVE YOU AN INDICATION OF FITNESS,BUT,MUST HAVE ALL OTHER FACTORS TO GO WITH IT IF ITS TO HAVE A CHANCE !!!

Had this happen 3 years ago, I had to move my lofts to another location about half a mile away so decided to settle the birds in the winter months, they later went on to win well the following season, I thought it was a sign f condition as they were flying freely for about 2 hours a day, sometimes in cold conditions.  ;) ;) ;)

When pigeons are oozing oil, especially on their higher primaries, during racing, it is usually a sign of, top condition. WHY NO OTHER REPLIES FROM  SOME OF OUR RESIDENT EXPERTS? MY  MIND BOGGLES!  VIC.

The curling effect, usually on their coverts, is heredtry.

difficult to tell what this grease  mark is, over the internet,, could be a few things ,,, do you  mix  cod liver oil in the grub,, this is famous for marking them [but son comes off] even hormoform , can mark their flights,[again cleans up quick] have they sat near a chimney, this often slightly marks them  could be many things ,

the pigeon has an oil gland on its back  [youll be able to feel or even see it ,if you part the feathers ]  this is why , when the bird preens itself you will notice it starting off from this gland on the back , then , usualy the flights , this is to clean the flights and waterproof them [if you find this gland , then stimulate the tip of it with your finger , youll see a tiny spot of oil on your finger ] usually when a bird is in very good condition, this oil gland can and will produce slightly more oil than normaly, so could be due  do with this ,,,, as i say, only guesses , if your birds are flying well , there cant be much wrong with them anyway :)

Pigeons have grease quills. These do not open like feathers but produce grease to groom the feathers. If ya think about it, a feather is quite a delicate thing and all delicate things need attending ( yer wifes ). These quills are situated on the abdomen under the wings so may be over producing due to SOMETHING or lack of preening by the bird itself and causing a build up which would probably be right where you said and the wing action on flying brings it to the flights. Just my thoughts but probably wrong. There's more to these doos than meets the eye.
