Guest Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 One of our young birds has developed a large black lump on it's chest. A fellow fancier thinks it may be a protein lump. Any ideas ?

DOVEScot Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 will it just drop off ??? or do i need to treat it ? It may just drop off but I followed advice of other members and tied a piece of thread round it, bird made full recovery
Guest Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 thanks Dovescot, i'll let the other half do that, i'm a bit squeemish lol
DOVEScot Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Dovescot that's exactly what it looks like Seemingly it is the individual birds inability to handle protein not sure if they come back or it is a one off
Guest cloudview Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 im surprised at you pigeon widow, i know youv,e got an expert living just across the road from you , or at apush you could have asked me , no charge, just a brew
Guest bigda Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 nap it, don't start a hospital these birds that take these things very rarely do any good :'( at racing
Guest Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 omg bigda your talking to a pigeon widow who made the other half bury the last bird he nipped.
Guest Posted September 23, 2008 Report Posted September 23, 2008 Cloudview it was that "expert" who told me what it was and it didn't even cost me a brew lol
Guest pigeon82 Posted September 24, 2008 Report Posted September 24, 2008 tie abit of string around the lump tight but not to tight so it completely cuts threw the whole lump just so it starts to puff out and it will eventually drop off thats wat we wud do when i was a kid
Mark Bulled Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 Ive 2 hens that are carrying similar lumps, although admitedly not as large. Not sure if they are protein lumps as they have not been on a high protein diet but I usually get the odd one, normally in a baby at this time of year. I just leave them alone and they are always gone prior to pairing and have noticed no ill effects.
Guest Posted October 16, 2008 Report Posted October 16, 2008 I had a hen who had one of these lumps, i took her to a friend of my dads, who tied around the lump with fishing line, the lump fell off, and she carried on racing, lets know how your bird gets on!!!

JADE Posted November 3, 2008 Report Posted November 3, 2008 too much protein. tie a thread tightly round the lump to cut off the blood supply and it will eventually dry up and drop off.
