overmarco
I have a 6 weeks pigeon won't wont eat, I have to force feed him. No other simptoms, only if I dont feed him his poop turns into white water. I have found a vet that would do a fecal analysis but he comes to work on Monday. So the earliest on Tuesday I could get a diagnostic and on Wednesday a medicine. I already have the Harka-Mectin dewormer, but is says it shouldn't be used for birds under 8 weeks. Has anybody used it for a pigeon under 8 weeks? And is this external treatment effective for worms? Any advice much appreciated.

badgeman
Sounds like young bird sickness , i have had a lot of it this season ,so too have a lot of friends ,it seems only to occur in the later bred pigeons ,make up a liquid mash of porridge and syringe it down if the throat is clear and you cant see any signs of canker ,the more food you can get down the better chance of success,
overmarco
there's no sign of canker, I am feeding about 150 defrosted peas a day. I am just asking if anybody has ever used harker-mectin on birds less than 8 weeks old.

Guest strapper
i take it the bird is drinking more water than usual? refuses feed....i wonder if this is ...hexamita! if i remember right this once was treated with emtryl. if this is the case then once treated will make a full recovery. as asked by another.. why..are you feeding frozen peas??? also you must treat all in the same loft the sick bird is in as any infection now has probably been passed on through the drinker if bird is too bad then dispose of. Guest strapper
forgot to add ..it could be a number of different things that could be wrong with this bird but you described white droppings..i would take that as like rice water?...keep an eye out for more being afected..when a bird has an illness it sometimes has watery droppings , this is usually caused by the body not taking in the nutrients from the food and they pass straight through the body without being absorbed. Guest IB
At 6 weeks, in my opinion it is highly unlikely that your bird is ill, nor is it in need of force feeding or medication. (1) it is very likely not long split from its parents - was there a pot of food in the box and was it eating from it? (2) is it in a section with older youngsters who are eating strongly and one or two perhaps mature young cocks that have been bullying and beating the bird up? The 'cure' is to free the bird from stress - put it in a spare box with water and proper pigeon food, and let it get on with it. And no, it is not safe to use a medication other than directed on the label. Wormers used on old birds with no worms have damaged their gut, so reckon will do worse damage to a young bird. Guest strapper
reduced feeding and white droppings is a clear sign of hexamita!!...this illness dont pick and choose age of occupant!. Acute catarrhal (or even bloody) enteritis with liquid, rice water-like or mucoid, malodorous diarrhoea. Affected pigeons refuse feed and drink more water, resulting in emaciation and debility. Young birds in particular sometimes succumb so severely that the entire intestinal tract is involved and the soft or aqueous faeces is mixed with blood. it is hard to go by what some fanciers describe how their bird is ill,i think the best is a vet with pigeon handling experience. pjc
has it ever fed itself?
Guest
The white is not 'poop', they excrete uric acid, an insoluble solid which can make you think its their feces, you can't go by that for diagnosis, you'd need a test done, try giving some pro-biotic like yakult to help it fight any bugs it might have until you get to see the vet which is the way you should go if you wish to keep the bird. Oh, and do isolate at all costs, don't take the risk its not YB's or something else, better to be safe than sorry.
pjc
you can all advise him to give it what ever junk you like but if the bird has never fed itself since weaning then whats the point, whatever you prop it up with won't make it eat!
