Guest wattle Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 well im back from hell started with 75 + 12 from louella, all the birds got the virus, the 12 louella birds died, 35 of my own birds went down with bad symptoms, the other 40 were varied with 6 different type of symptoms, ranging from twisted necks, swollen eyelids, throwing seeds over there shoulders, sore legs, walking backwards, watery dorppings, falling fowards.i put shavings on all the floors 3" thick to keep the floors dry, left food on front them all the time, the only things i gave the birds was prolyte from aviform on monday, wedensday, and friday every week and multi vitemins on all the other days in the water.after 3 months the last bird with symptoms stoped showing symptoms last week, most of the advice i was getting from people including my vet was to destroy all the birds when the birds got the virus, but i did not listen, i love pigeons and have kept them for 30 years now and was not about to start killing the birds i love so much, and am i glad after 3 months of hell i have 66 of my birds left and out flying everyday with no after effects and i am a very happy man, so the one lesson i learnt is if the pigeons get sick no matter what the have give them the chance of life and you might be lucky like me.
Guest bakes Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 twisting of the bird neck sound like paramixo virus bud
Guest wattle Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 ps, more good news the vet told me that the birds that recover from the virus are ammune to the virus for life and are not carriers of the virus.
Guest gladdo Posted August 12, 2009 Report Posted August 12, 2009 would these birds wattle been well spaced out as over crouding causes major problems id say. ...mikey ..just a thought ...mikey...my mate had similar problems and he left them all locked up together ...they got better ...necks came back and loads of them birds scored and 2 of them won !!! amazing but dont kill them mate...mikey

Well done good to see it didn't get you down. The only thing I would say is that perhaps some didn't go down with it and may still be carriers (hope I'm wrong), maybe paramixo, maybe paratyphoid. I would treat for paratyphoid early winter, Baytril for 10 days and then vaccinate, if you can get hold of vaccine, it was hard to get last winter, just my opinion but you've done the right thing going to the vet, he should be the expert
Guest IB Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 well im back from hell started with 75 + 12 from louella, all the birds got the virus, the 12 louella birds died, 35 of my own birds went down with bad symptoms, the other 40 were varied with 6 different type of symptoms, ranging from twisted necks, swollen eyelids, throwing seeds over there shoulders, sore legs, walking backwards, watery dorppings, falling fowards.i put shavings on all the floors 3" thick to keep the floors dry, left food on front them all the time, the only things i gave the birds was prolyte from aviform on monday, wedensday, and friday every week and multi vitemins on all the other days in the water.after 3 months the last bird with symptoms stoped showing symptoms last week, most of the advice i was getting from people including my vet was to destroy all the birds when the birds got the virus, but i did not listen, i love pigeons and have kept them for 30 years now and was not about to start killing the birds i love so much, and am i glad after 3 months of hell i have 66 of my birds left and out flying everyday with no after effects and i am a very happy man, so the one lesson i learnt is if the pigeons get sick no matter what the have give them the chance of life and you might be lucky like me. Well done. I've posted over the years about pigeons being able to cure themselves of illnesses, even viral attacks, and you are the first member to prove that fact through first hand experience (of paramyxo). Is it possible to provide more info? (1) You imported 12 birds which all died - Had these birds been vaccinated against paramyxo prior to leaving the Stud? (2) Your own birds were all infected, 35 'bad' / 40 'other'. Had either group not been vaccinated against paramyxo prior to illness striking your loft? (Looking for reason for difference) (3) 66 survived - i.e 9 died. Had the 9 that died been vaccinated against paramyxo prior to the disease striking your loft? (4) Did you vaccinate any of your birds against paramyxo during the outbreak?
Bugsy Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Wattle, I can also tell you that the birds that were only squirting recover well and if they are any good can continue racing at the top level, I had PMV ( the birds) back in 1984 and at the time thought it was the end of the world, the Y/B's had won 4 out of the first 8 races and then went down with it (confirmed by MAFF), I got rid of all the ones that had twisted necks but the others got better themselves and then quite a few of them went on to win big prizes, including the hen that won 2nd welsh Nat Thurso and the car nom 2yrs later, so keep your chin up old boy and keep on smiling. John Burgham.
pjc Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Well done getting them through it but i'm not sure they will be imune now though! As has been stated some may be carriers so all need to vaccinated if you havn't already done so. Did the Liecester outfit refund your money for the rubbish you were sent and or compensate you for all the trouble you have had? Phil
Guest strapper Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 back last year i had probs with my youngbirds...showing signs of it...but not the twisting of the necks...some believe it may have mutated??..as there were loads of it reported around the country. i hadnt vaccinated at that point ...i disposed of 26 late bred youngsters from one of my other lofts..14 were bred for me by two top guys..they were ones i also got rid of. the 40 plus i had in a seperate loft ..older ones ..who had it 1st...i did something that could be of useful info for some...i vaccinated them!!...within 3 days they were looking better and flapping. within a week or so after that they were allowed out...20mins flying back down...3 days later an hour....i now know that this could have kicked their kidneys and imune system into action. i entered the last 3 races of the season..1 race no result ..just behined...i won the last two races in my club with 3 positions in each race in the 6 positions we give. also 7th 13th 18th 36th fed..the one hen scored 15th fed this year from lilliers.254 mls. saying that im not sure what i had ...but the droppings were similar... forgot to mention..i placed a bird that had been in someone elses loft for 3 days straight back in..later found out he had trouble..my fault entirely i should have known...lesson learned.
Guest Owen Posted August 13, 2009 Report Posted August 13, 2009 Paramixovirus. Classic symptoms. Watery droppings squirting everywhere. Probably the tips of the flights are dropping off. Next it will be the twisted necks (star gazing). You should go to see a Vet to confirm what it is. It is a notifiable disease. Newcastle Disease in Chicken. If I am right you could'nt have vaccinated your birds and neither have Louella. I would ring Louella and tell him what has been said and threaten him with being reported to the Ministry of Ag. If I am right he will trip over himself to accomadate you. If the Ministry find paramixo on his premises they will close him down. By the way, thanks for telling us all about this. It is important that we know what people like Louella are doing. How the heck does he carry on doing business if he delivers pigeons that are sick and dying?
