Below a picture of our wild and free, but sick pigeon. Not urgent, died already...

I have been wondering if it was trichomonas or maybe something else.

I cleaned the eye (with Petaisodona) and finally found the eye under that yellow-how-you-call-it. Then the bird was able to open his eye a little bit, and I kept on cleaning it a couple of days, and then there was no more coming that yellow stuff again.

The beak was open all the time and the tongue seemed to be stuck to the upper part part of the beak.

I did not see anything yellow colored inside the mouth.

I did not have any medicine, nor better knowledge, so I started giving TrichoPlus in water, and made the pigeon to drink several times a day. After 2 days he got better and even started eating – or at least was trying hard... But then again got worse and finally died.

I visited this web site today

http://pigeons.taylorschoice.co.uk/pages/Pigeon_Health_Problems_and_Solutions.php and was wondering if this illness could have been CORYZA instead...?

Anyway, I have ordered already both TrichoPlus and TrichoCure.

Sick pigeons with this kind of symptoms I have found about 10 during 1 year on our yard. They also look like their feathers in head and neck are dirty or wet, but when I check them closer, the feathers are not really wet. If you know what I mean... (sorry my bad English again  ;D ) The problem is that I can not catch them early enough, only when it is too late... That´s why I will try TrichoPlus, if it helps the pigeons not to get sick with trichomonas. Have you used TrichoPlus and can you recommend it?

By the way, thank you very much for your very useful web site

I already started writing my shopping list   ;)

looking at the picture it seems you have a respitory infection, you mention the beak open etc..possibly ornithosis...canker would not close an eye of a pigeon.

try looking at this..

Oh no... I am really worried now...

I called to my vet immidiately and if I find one more sick pigeon, I will take it to my vet and he will check what is going on. His opinion was that we do not have ornithosis here, but of course we can not be sure.  I hope it is not ornithosis, it would be my worst nightmare...

Anyway, thank you for your replies.

You look to have a very serious form of respiritory disease. And yes I would suspect ornithosis. These birds are in such poor condition that they could have other problems as well. Cocci, canker, worms and goodness knows what.

You need to be very careful because you can quite easilly infect humans with these pools of infection. Sorry mate, but I think you should get shot of these birds. You could spend a lot of money and still not be able to help them. And the risk of contamination to humans and other creatures is very high. It looks to me as if their illnesses have gone away too far to effect an effective cure.

Sorry, but someone has to tell it as it is.

Where do these pigeons live? as if they are out in the open, i would doubt it would be a respiratory infection?? could the birds be getting poisoned? if you really do want to find out what it is, best have an autopsy on the dead bird, yes it will cost, but will cost you alot of money in the long run, if you keep buying medicine you dont need.  :)

im 99% sure its ornithosis..ive already sent a pm saying as such.

the picture below shows this(off the web site)...this is not a pecked eye.

the picture is off an early infected bird...those in the pics are after a length of time.

These birds are free, wild pigeons. Yes, defenitely I will take a pigeon to vet if I find one more like this. Those two in the photos died long time ago.

Another racing pigeon person said that it could be trichomonas, in addition with something else, and that if it was ornithosis, I would be writing this message in hospital now...

I do hope it is not the worst. Anyway, this will be found out if I find another one like this.

Do you know if it does any harm if I give medicine against ornithosis just-in-case? I found some that I can mix with their drinking water. Recommendations about medicines would be welcomed as well of course. If there is anything I can do, I would like to try to save the rest of the birds from illness like this.

tanja..i would highly reccomend having them tested, the person who told you if your birds had ornithosis you,d be in hospital is wrong, humans can catch it ..that is true.

but if you had it you would be out of breath and have other symptoms like muscle cramps.

there are many that are against blind treating but there are also many that are blind and dont treat. thus freely giving other fanciers their problems.

there are exceptions to treating blind.

no doubt would i not investigate the birds for having this problem...respitory can attack any animal wether enclosed or out in an avaiary.

9-10 its passed through the drinker where most other illneses are picked up.

if you can get cider vinegar over there i would suggest putting a small capful in their drinker 3 times a week, this will also keep the salmonella organisms down and stop them rising.

cider vinegar will also improve their feathering.

also you could put a crushed garlic clove in their water for 2 days...i say 2 days as i assume its very hot there and it would go bad if left for any longer.

this will help in keeping the worm count down and also aid in the birds health.

garlic has antibacterial qualities in it..i believe its called alicin<<check spelling lol.

i hope that this problem has gone but to make sure i would have the birds tested to have piece of mind.

The pigeons have learnt to use the drinkers, that are close to their feeders, and often they drink right after eating. So I could put medication to their drinkers, and that way at least many of them could be treated.

That garlic I will defenitely try. Thank you! I will look for that cider vinegar as well.

I think that these pigeons have lived on this yard and nearby years. When we moved here, I tried to get rid of them - and I couldn´t. No matter what, they will stay here. So the only option for me is to keep them as healthy as possible. And now I have learnt to love them.

To keep them completely healthy is a mission impossible, but I will try anyway.

Thank you for being so helpful although I don´t have racing pigeons. By getting help and advice and by learning like this, I will have racing pigeons one day  ;)

Think it is quite serious if a number of wild pigeons are infected, there may be sickness within that colony, and you should be very careful when dealing with them. The only sure way of finding out what is wrong with them is to take the next bird showing the symptoms along to the vet.

I am not sure that it is a good idea to treat sick birds in a wild colony, may be Nature's way of weeding out inferior birds, as those that survive having been exposed, will probably become immune to the illness.

Yes, this is what I will do if I find any more of those.

Very, VERY wise words! That´s what has come also to my mind when trying to help sick pigeon, or taking care of a small pigeon that left the nest too early (in some cases might have been the weaker one and was kicked out from the nest because of illness / weakness for some other reason). It just seems to be so difficult to turn my back to them - or to kill them.
