I have a bird that has ,what I would call a bark or similar . I had one the same about a month ago, separated it ,treated it with doxy-t for 7 days and it was fine , put it back with the rest but within a fortnight started again so it was got rid off. As with the last bird the wattles are fine , the droppings are good but the birds that were affected struggled when out flying, could I be treating for the wrong illness ?

best only to treat for what you know what the problem is ,so you may have been treating for the wrong thing

Thanks for that advice....i have never seen this in any my birds before, and i have had them a while. one thought i did think about was that i used a litter (cat), could be that they picked something out it ! but why have they all not got the prob ? anyway its out now, thanks again...

cat litter is only fullers earth and shouldnt be harmfull alot of UNC lofts use it , check throat for visable foriegn objects , if this bird did have respiritry have you altered your loft to combat the ventilation problem ????? if you didnt then it will return because you havent done anything about the problem yes you treated the bird but put back in same enviroment

If you feed linseed this can happen, linseed can easy be trapped in the upper slit.

canker in the throat can cause birds to 'bark' as you call it...treating with a resp cure will do it no good.

this is the reason that it did return.

but saying that...if your feeding pellets they can rub the throat linning and cause the throat to become irritable...hence the barking to clear it.

after all we cough when we have something in the throat!

canker can reduce the will to fly also!

have it tested next time ;)

I had a bird doing this last year and on inspection of the throat i found a wheat kernel(seed) stuck in the windpipe!

I took it out with a toothpick, and all was well!
