Guest Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Aye just mind our selves they are decendants of rock doves, here is some from Dunotter castle, Stonehaven a wild a remote corner of Scotland ;D ;D ;D Frank Harper's video also featured the 'big house' dovecote, and the different designs. He noted all the 'holes in the walls' were high up, and the nests were arranged around a central shaft, which acted like a chimney, sucking all the stale stuff up the centre of the building and out thro a big hole in the roof.
Guest slugmonkey Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 Here is a loft I built as you can see its WELL ventilated Never mind the fat guy, snake or dog I use burlap bags as curtains to block wind and rain as needed Yes the snake was killed in loft !!!
me Posted September 22, 2007 Report Posted September 22, 2007 Bruno, if you go to any local garden centre, you can buy a humidity guage for a few quid and the best level is around about 65% humidity. Its very hard to get a constant 65% level though without some form of artificial control, such as heating and fans etc. But a loft with no low ventilation does work better as no cold damp air is coming in etc. My loft has two low vents that can be closed off if its really damp, but also has low level heating close to the vents. Thats in my OB loft, in the YB loft its totally different as this faces east, but at the start of this year i added more windows to catch more early sunshine and more vents so the loft was open most of the day etc, and my YBs have been in excellent condition all year round. Ive packed in and only got a few pair left, but the birds i gave away got some very pleasing comments. Davie Angus never felt the need to buy a humidity gauge from a garden centre or anywhere else believe "me".

weecunny Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 light a fag and watch where the smoke goes
Guest Posted October 31, 2007 Report Posted October 31, 2007 For a long time thought my minerals were getting damp due to 'damp air' in the loft? Turned out dampness was caused by bird's saliva, they were drooling over it so much that when they flicked their head to one side, they spattered some of the minerals on the wall 'pot was attached to, and they stuck to it.
