Guest joshdonlan Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Hi guys, i thought id give you an update on the hen. After i posted this, the following few days the bird fell to pieces in moulting. Im presuming something to do with the change in lofts delayed the moult. Now the birds feathers are nearly all full and is looking much better and is feeling better in the hand too. Thanks for the help Josh
Guest IB Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Glad to hear the bird has improved. (1) Moult: It is easy to say that a bird should be at 'X' stage in the moult. As it is an old bird, and a breeder, I think it depends very much on when the birds were paired, and how many rounds they reared. I have two hens, both yearlings, both reared a late round of youngsters. While they have moulted their wing, they are just thro the head moult, and both look a little scraggy around the neck. (2) Cocci: I've just had my birds tested in the past week and apart from high cocci count, they're OK. I cannot understand how this high count has come about, cos you don't associate this time of year with stress (not unless the sudden drop in temperatures has something to with it?). Vet also says he's surprised my birds don't have the disease? Not sure how to take that one. :-/ Another vet checked them back in January, and the cocci count then was background, the advice was not to treat as low levels help immunity; Dangerously high levels now, the birds are not sick. Are they immune? I'm going to treat with a sulphonomide anyway. (3) Worms: What I did have back in January was hairworm, which I treated with Levamisol on vet's advice. After that I looked at natural wormers, and posted them up, gave them in a tea maybes once a month, and still clear. Now looking at natural antiprotozoals, trich and cocci, have found some, will post up on them later.
Guest joshdonlan Posted December 7, 2008 Report Posted December 7, 2008 Good post IB. when you say 'Vet also says he's surprised my birds don't have the disease?' What disease do you mean by this? Thanks Josh
