rasbull Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 I have noticed a few of my pigeons have there mouths open and appear to be panting. Is this to cool the body down and totally natural or is it for some underlaying reason? I have seen many birds display the same signs especially when landing after a fly. (not just my own pigeons)
Guest TIMBARRA LOFTS Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 they are cooling down the blood. nothing to worry about,
john nico Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 its maybe the change in the weather has it been warm the last couple ov days
Guest spin cycle Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 they do pant to cool down....the question IMO is why do they do this after an excersize flight ?....in my own limited experience i think it is a sign of lacking a little fitness.
Tony C Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 Outside of illness being overweight, unfit, hot conditions or a fright will make them pant. Or trying to keep up with my pigeons ;D ;D
Guest IB Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 I don't think it's been all that warm, certainly not warm enough to make birds pant after exercise. Only open mouth I've seen just now is with hens eggy & near their time, and that was when taking off from the deck. So maybe more to do with fitness and / or weight than heat?
Guest kev d Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 ive been waching my birds exercise they are flying realy well after being locked up over winter and one or two of mine are panting as well it,s just that there not very fit at the moment . but they will be when the basket comes out .
Guest Owen Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 You are probably over feeding and they are too damned fat. Check for canker and cocci because they will not have enough energy too fly much if they have either of those problems. Overwieght and overfed pigeons do not win races. Fact.
Guest kev d Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 mine are on open loft for about 3hrs aday the temp down here as been about 17 for over a week now
Guest Davy Fleming Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 Can assure you guys pigeons that pant are slightly overweight or a bit nervous, they may have a respiritory problem but would gamble on the first two
hotrod Posted March 19, 2009 Report Posted March 19, 2009 mine are on open loft for about 3hrs aday the temp down here as been about 17 for over a week now where are you majorca?
