pigeonforce Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 birds are eating slugs what do you think I went into my loft tonight and they were dead snails and slugs in the loft mine eating them Partner doing the same is this normal?????
Guest slugmonkey Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 I have heard of pigeons eating bugs before, they are probably good for them as I am sure they have a lot of protien I don't know about them carrying cocci or being poision though I have never heard that P.S I am not poision but I do have a high cocci count !!!
Tony C Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 Try giving them a vit B complex, something that contains vit B12 and riboflavin.
Guest slugmonkey Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 WHAT is liver fluke ??? not questioning it just never heard it before

Guest stb Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 my pigeons go in the feild at side of house and eat slugs all the time especially when feeding young birds. Have done this for 25 years and aint done them no harm. hard to stop them once they are in the habbit, mine are on open hole all the time. the slugs and snail aint getting poisned with slug bait here so no prob
Guest Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 go round your loft with salt 2/3 times a week most fanciers dont even know they are going in there loft at night look for the shinny trail on feeders etc. at certain times of the year they are more than we think this is when the birds seem to take a liken to them try and avoid at all cost i do a slug patrol every night if need be with the salt after 3/4 nights no more slugs
edwards Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 bud its a no no never let your birds near anything of the sort mate seriouse bacteria there it only takes the slightest thing to cause an out break grain minerals grit vits and probitics thats it slug shell will carrie fly eggs as well which are a night mare if they enter the birds system if the birds have a high cocci count try find out whats causing it baycox is your only man for cocci.
Guest stb Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 its not the big black sluggs that slink about at night mine eat its the we brown snail way a shell on. They dont touch those big black things.
Guest slugmonkey Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 According to that link they enter after being laid by the fluke on grass which is ingested so maybe the ones that are in the snails arent mature enough to infect
Guest shadow Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 slugs carry tape worms I would not be letting eat them
edwards Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 thank god someone sees the sence in not letting your birds near anything of the like
Guest stb Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 O MG my pigeons must have every disease know to man after eating snails for all those years. they are on open hole all the time and im not always there so hard to tell them to stop eating them. they have done well over the 25 years so it cant be causing them any problems. But every one to there own opinion.
edwards Posted June 23, 2009 Report Posted June 23, 2009 must be part of your system then mate jesus i think i might feed snails instead of grits in the morning how long do you think it would take a pigeon to break one down in its system providing it made it past the crop 99% of the time the pigeon will target the shell and to break it for a mineral aid but eat the lot lads not a hope would the bird not have a gut reaction or some way affect the intestines different strokes for different folks.
Guest stb Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 they dont eat the shells only whats inside them you would need a hammer tae break some of them.
Larry Lucas Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 It is a fact, snails and slugs are hosts for tapeworm. Probably why so many French are skinny. ;D ;D
Guest slugmonkey Posted June 24, 2009 Report Posted June 24, 2009 LOL lets not upset the french !!! I am not suggesting you feed your birds snails but I dont think a few would do them any harm besides unless you kept them locked down 24/7 how would you actually know they werent eating any I dont encourage my birds to eat bugs but I am sure they do besides I feed enough garlic, vinegar, and roughage that I doubt any worms would survive

My birds are continually picking up slugs in the garden, good for the garden and extra protein for them.. doesnt appear to do them any harm, in fact they are in excellent health. I never need to use slug bait.
