dwh Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 its a natural occurance compare it us shedding skin or like other animals when they shedding their coat
Tony C Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Sometimes when a pigeons pushing through its last couple of flights they'll now and again give a wing a quick flick, I believe this a sign of discomfort.
Guest Owen Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 I have no idea if pigeons feel pain as we do, but I always associate the slow blink with pain. Birds that are growning their flights often sit quietly and look miserable. And I have often noticed the slow blink. I don't know how we humans could possibly know what they feel.
Guest strapper Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 you only have to look at a pigeon suffering badly from a severe canker infection..the bird will stand puffed up and slightly opening its beak and blink an eye slowly..as if the pain is coming on and off. will do the same also for similar infections.

Guest IB Posted November 13, 2009 Report Posted November 13, 2009 Think there's two questions in there: does growing / throwing flights cause pain? and [2] how can you tell when a bird is in pain? [1] As a teenager I was brought up to believe in the toothache theory. Sounded right, the pigeons primaries and secondaries are anchored in bone, just like our teeth, and each flight falls out because there's a new one growing in at the bud, just like our adult teeth grow in and push our 'milk' teeth out. There's pain for us there OK. But we've usually only 2 sets of teeth in our lifetime, pigeons moult every year. They also have a 'prey escaping predator' trick in that if anything catches hold of them they can lose a whole tail and half a wing and not bat an eyelid. No pain in that it seems. What finally swung it for me was having to pull a deformed flight after the main moult; did it, put the bird down ~ and he started to crow and birl on the floor. No pain in that either. Agree bird is reluctant to fly when moulting out last 3 primaries. Reckon that is nothing to do with pain and just down to a lot harder getting airborne [no enough lift to get off the ground] and bother landing 'lightly' [no enough drag to slow bird down quick enough]. [2] how can you tell when a bird is in pain? It's well known in vet circles birds feel pain differently from us [mammals]. Was at vet a few years ago while one of my latebred hens was having fluid removed from a swollen shoulder joint using a hypodermic needle straight into the joint. No anaesthetic, she didn't bat an eyelid the whole time [i was holding her] and when it was done and she was back in the box, she was batting my hand using her gammy wing. Only this year I had to stitch up a breached crop with needle & thread. That hen didn't seem too fussed either. But what I have noticed is there is a definite sign that the bird is in distress / pain. Only seen it once or twice. One I can remember witnessing was a cock that got a toe caught in a floor grill, and it got bent backwards against the joints. 2 or 3 feathers immediately above the wattle stand out straight, above the beak. Rest of head feathers lye flat, body & wing feathers remain tight. Eye can be fully open, or half closed, but there wasn't any blinking.
