Roland Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34614380/ns/health-infectious_diseases/ Over use is prevalent. Unwise use, plus using willy - nilly, and because, though we should and DO know better, it seems far too many just ignore hoping for a Goldern Vail.
OLDYELLOW Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 goes without saying realy , if you subject well pigeons to un-needed medication , when they truely are ill the medications wont be as effective . TEST =TREAT AND RETEST , and just because you can use a microscope doesnt ensure viruses are going to be detected or the medications used are going to be effective vet labs go that extra step and use spectrum specific drugs to ensure the treatment give is going to be effective
sox Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 theres far to many meds in books to buy to treat this and that the fancier can get confused and treat nedlessly lets face it we dont know what its doin to the bird !
Guest IB Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 For once we seem to be well ahead of USA. EU banned use of antibiotics in food-animals in 2006. They were banned because their use in healthy animals was known to endanger us humans. I'm surprised Americans aren't aware of that.
Guest youngzimmy Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 TO MANY DRUGS OR INDEED ANY UNNEEDED DRUGS WILL BREAKDOWN THE DOOS NATURAL IMUNE SYSTEM IF IT AINT BROKE THERE IS NUTHIN TO FIX SO LEAVE WELL ALONE

Guest Owen Posted December 30, 2009 Report Posted December 30, 2009 OLDYELLOW, I am sorry but I do not have the faith you have in Vets or the Labs. I will not go into detail here, because it would not be right, but I can back up what I am saying. As far as viruses are concerned, the only hope you have, either for yourself or for your livestock is to vaccinate. Antibiotics are of no use in treating viruses. The problem we have is finding vaccines that are based on the infections we are trying to deal with. You only have to look at the flue vaccines to know that they are not all that well targeted. If they were, people would not have the flue at all that winter. You know as well as I do that in spite of the vaccinations flue still strikes people. OK in a less virulant form but it still does it's dirty work. If the pigeon viruses had been targeted properly we would have got rid of paramyxovirus and paratyphoid by know. This especially true of paramixovirus because we have been on a vaccination regime for years past. And it is still hanging about waiting to jump on the unwary. I have seen three nasty cases this year and heard of a lot more. The Vets have totally failed to give us protection from the Young Bird Sickness Syndrome. Every year there are hundreds of birds dying and I have little doubt that a lot of the losses are caused by this terrible disease. It is claimed that viruses are to blame, and I am inclined to agree, so where are the vaccines to help us erradicate this scourge? I am willing to accept that there some good Vets out there. In fact I know of one myself, but even in that case you can never get him on the telephone and it is a wast of time leaving messages. But I have to say that most of them are in it for the money. I truly believe that we Fanciers must learn more about the health or is that ill health of our birds to be able to make serious improvements. We have tried the easy way of treating blindly and I think most of us now know that that is a road to ruin. I would like us to do what a lot of Australians do, appoint health inspecters at Club level. Apparantly the people appointed to the job are trained and certified by the local Vets, and their word is law when it comes to decisions about the birds entered for races. Sorry to be disagreeable, but I think this subject is worth proper discussion.
Roland Posted December 30, 2009 Author Report Posted December 30, 2009 I think that Vaccines is the way to go. I also believe - like Para- that it has to be a regular, and possibly an forever saga. When one thinks that the most effective jab / vaccine of all time was for Polio and the great strides and wonderful results made and seen, one but must remember what happens when it was thought it was erradicated to all sense and purpose; and powers to be decided in another country to do away with the cost burden.... It was back with a vengence in no time at all. It hadn't gone no where, was just controlled via vacination. So it may well be that as resilance is achieved, and stronger measure then will be a must, I think to stem, curb and control so much - in todays world - vacinnes and protection will have to be the way forward. Yes costly, but then one has to wiegh up both costs and of course vacination wins hands down.
