Guest IB Posted April 8, 2010 Report Posted April 8, 2010 I was faced with my first crop job last year. You do need at least one pair of helping hands, and a table. Cleaned wound and applied antiseptic. Tried stitching, but there was so many loose skin ends that I wasn't sure what was getting stitched to what, and only got one in when I decided it wasn't on. So tried cutting a piece of duck tape to size (tiny) pulled the crop ends together and taped that over. Sealed bigger wound in birds chest with healing paste, placed a cotton wool pad over that and taped it to feathers on either side of the wound. Crop proved water-tight right away. 2 daughters thought the bird would die, she's still here, ready to go, and grand-daughter also had first hand experience of damage a hawk can do to a pigeon.
Dodgy Trapper Posted April 8, 2010 Report Posted April 8, 2010 Clean the wound sticth up with normal cotton the wife uses, then gets some New Skin Germalene do it from the chemist , its like nail varnich it seals up the crop. The wound will mend its self in time.

BLACK W F Posted April 8, 2010 Report Posted April 8, 2010 thats why i advocated the use of wound powder or purple spray to stop infection, why criticise advice given ? i note you did not mention any way of cleaning the wound before gluing but i didnt jump down your throat did i? i based my advice on previous similar injuries and can say it worked for me in future i will give all advice by pms as i am not going to be criticised for trying to help people STAN MATE YOUR ADVICE WAS SOUND AND THATS WHAT I WOULD TRY AT FIRST BEFORE ANY THING ELSE ALL I WILL SAY IS DO NOT STOP GIVING ADVICE VIA THE OPEN FORUM THATS HOW FOLK LEARN AND REMEMBER IF YOU STITCH OR SUPERGLUE BE VERY CAREFUL AS THIS IS A RACING PIGEON AND THE FEATHER COVERING IS THERE FOR A REASON

Guest devonred Posted April 8, 2010 Report Posted April 8, 2010 Iodine spray is one of the best things i,ve used to stop infection. Also used sterestrips to hold wounds together.
