I am normally a heavy feeder of YBs but this year to keep them under control ive been giving a cupfull of depurative per 18 YBs on a morning and 1oz each of V-Laga YB mix on a night. They are looking good + alert and easy to control when I want them in.

Hi Westy,

I would never ration youngsters, all the time they are growing.  Feed until they are satisfied.  I let mine out once a day in the afternoon, to avoid flyaways

( we've had a post on this ) and by this time, they are again looking for their daily feed.

When you're training them of course, then that is a different thing, then you can reduce their feed to control them.

I think you're right in only feeding once a day, after their exercise.

At the moment our young birds are getting all they want to eat as they have just been weaned, I will be letting them out in approx 7 days, then I will change my routine to once a day feeding, after they have been out flying.

I think once the birds are flying 1.1/4 ounces of feed a day is sufficient, but I brake this down into three lots, they're given a few safflower seeds as a trapping incentive, then they are given barley, then pigeon pellets then 14 percent grain mix.

I think is it very easy to give your young birds too much protein.

if your only having them out once a day in the afternoo then you can give them a light feed of diet mix in the morning then top them up after afternoon exercice  they will soon learn to trap because they are going at least 8 hours beetween meals from morning and afternoon feeds and longer beetween afternoon and morning feed

Mine have as much as they want in the evening only, I let them out in the afternoon but, when I shake the tin to bring them back in they just ignore me and come back in when they want!!  How do I train them to come back but not have them hungry? :-/

If your birds don't recognise that you're the one who brings the food you'll not get 'em under your control. Honestly I couldn't crack this one 'till we started to feed twice a day.

i also feed twice a day half oz am, then as muc as they desire pm, this regime carrys on until its time to train then food is cut by quarter of an ounce to control trapping!

Much prefer to feed twice a day. Agree with the post that it can help you with training the birds to trap... don't put down enough for all the birds, first ones in scoff the lot, leaving little or nothing for stragglers. If they're all in together, top the hopper up, or give a seed tit-bit as a reward...  ;D but don't give too much as they go back out later and the straggler cycle repeat (with 'new' birds) .. used to have grey hair which turned white before I cottoned-on to that one.  ;D

Stragglers also don't have to wait more than 8/12 hours for their next meal, and they'll be sharp in then.

Agree with other posts ... don't starve birds, or keep food off them, at a time of their life when they need '150% of their energy' just for growing. On quantities, a 'resting' bird eats 10% of its weight daily (= 1.5 ounces?) just to survive. I think a 'working' bird will obviously need more.

Thanks Bruno - can you just clarify for me though......do you let the birds out first thing, before feeding,  then call them in for 'breakfast' then out again till the evening feed? Or, do you feed them before they go out for the day?  Thanks

after all young birds are in & most are roosting, there is about 2 ounce left on loft floor, the odd bird or 2 will carry on feeding but some is left till morning, obviously feeding too much, & wondering why young birds are sitting on roof full & not rushing in for feed next day,

please explain this to young westy, as he is not believing me.

thanks all

Out hungry, Peckedhen. Mine usually beetle off for an hour, when they come back I've cleaned out, changed their water and am ready for them, just call them in and feed them.

Once in and fed, they stay in until time to go out again. I think you'd be asking for trouble letting them out 'just' fed, would think they'll laze around rooftops and such like, and become absolutely impossible to control.
