Guest shadow Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 by feeding a mix you know the birds are getting all the nutrients they need
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 yah but alot of times i run out of it, i empty a 5 gallon pail of mix in 2 weeks or less,
jimmy white Posted October 2, 2007 Report Posted October 2, 2007 feed the best mix at the right time for the right races [i,e sprint or distance ] inthe off season, good barley fed a little b4 their feed will keep the weight off them [personally im not keen on wheat ]
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 what about oats? are they good for homers?
EAGLEOWL Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 always try feed a good balanced mixed diet to your birds ,wheat can lead to making the droppings wet barley not a lover of the stuff never used oats but i know a fancier who uses them alot . if you are running out of corn all the time try feeding less or cut your birds down .less birds less food .
Guest MBpigeonguy Posted October 9, 2007 Report Posted October 9, 2007 i only have 51 birds!!!! i have all the main feed i need, 100 feet from my loft are 8 bins about 4 storys high, with corn barly weat corn and kenols and other stuff in it!!! so i can go get all the seeds i need. so i dont run out of thouse tyeps of seeds, but i cant get any canadian peas and other rare seeds, actualy il admit i have never feed my birds peas
Back garden fancier Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 If you find it easier to feed one seed only, make it tic beans. They are cheap and high in protein. Some people never feed anything else. You'll have a good moult, and rear cracking youngsters if you feed beans. Mate of mine fed his widow cocks nothing but beans and pellets and still won loads.

Guest Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 I have heard that beans are really good for the birds so could suit you.On the other hand there is a vast difference between the diets of show birds and racing birds,so you need to feed according to what your birds are being used for.You also need to take into account the breeding season, moulting, temperature, etc, etc, maybe you could give us some more info on what you are or are intending to do with your birds.
Guest Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 Ours doesn't seem tae like the tic beans, they always leave them. leave them there till next day chickadee, dont feed anything else till their gone...ur find they soon dissapear, sometimes if a mix is more small contents then large the birds will pick out that and leave beans.but u watch next morning ...they will be gone. i class it the same as a kid with a sandwich on the table and a bar of chocolate...its choc everytime. ...paul
schyphos Posted October 10, 2007 Report Posted October 10, 2007 Hi Pigeonguy, It is ok to feed your birds just one corn.In a lot of lofts at this time of year they are feeding only Barley. But twice a week using cod liver oil or lemon juice and sprinkling vitamins/minerals and other food supplements on the corn. This is to ensure that no nutrients are missing. I have just returned from visiting some top lofts in Holland and Belgium and a few of those are feeding just Wheat to their birds also sprouting wheat when available. Don't worry,go ahead and give it a try.

Guest MBpigeonguy Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 my birds are all sitting in stock moulting, and some of then even have no more feathers on the neck! my yb im going to make them fat for the winter as most of them are still in good racing form. right now in my feed section i have 3 pails of corn, one pail of kenola, 4 pails of weat, one pail of barly, and 2 bags of wild bird seeds, and one bag of dove mix, i suck at feeding, i think thats one of my biggest weekness, i can get some oats, and maby more,
Back garden fancier Posted October 11, 2007 Report Posted October 11, 2007 One of the reasons for feeding tic beans, is that you can put a hopper down and you are right the birds don't like them. That's the point, you can hopper feed without them getting fat. If you put a mix in a hopper they would stuff themselves with their favorite seeds and be fit for nothing.
Fair Play Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 Once read somewhere that Scottish groats and pinhead oatmeal was most nutritious for both man and pigeon
Guest Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 Once read somewhere that Scottish groats and pinhead oatmeal was most nutritious for both man and pigeon excellent feed fairplay more so with codliver oil on it ;)
Guest j.bamling Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 Oats are a very good feed i always feed 5% oats or groats when racing -- but my stock birds will have a month on groats prior to pairing up until they lay i mix them with layers pellets & a depuritive mix and they are very good layers
DOVEScot Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 at my friends farm today Feed prices for 56lb, but must your own bags Barley £4.00 Wheat £4.50 but running short Oats £4.50

chickadee Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 At last listening to somebody, it will save me a fortune in waisted seed ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Ha ha ha, I must admit I have been a bit on the overfeeding side, but, I'm gradually learning tae cut back a bit and they are eating more of the seed now instead of leaving it. ;D
Guest Posted October 20, 2007 Report Posted October 20, 2007 There's hopper feeding and hopper feeding. Have used it for both beans and mixture. When the birds are properly into the routine there is absolutely no stuffing themselves, they eat a little at a time, they eat often, and never have full crops. You top up at regular times or when needed. When I saw a particular type of grain had been left, I waited a wee while longer until it had all gone before topping up with more. Personally I hate this once a day feeding. In my opinion it just encourages the pigeons to gorge.

We have a situation where when one starts pecking the rest start pecking incase they are missing something :-/
