bewted Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 they can be poisonous to the system if overfed i would presume,as they put a lot of fat on pigeons if fed ad lib,,,,,,,,,,but, used as a treat or for trapping or both ,,,,they are good !!!!!! wild birds love peanuts,,so,,if the case poisonous to a pigeons system,,,,what happens to wild birds !!!! food for thought !!! more a matter of feeding sensibly ,,thats all !!!!
rembrant2coo Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Yes I know they love them but, a pigeon fancier from kennoway said that they were poisonous to the birds systems, now, I've been feeding peanuts to our birds since we got them and if they were poisonous all our birds would be stone dead by now, but, they are thriving. I just wondered if anyone else thought them not to be good for the birds, but, I'm more than happy with my replys, thanks bewted and geordie. My birds are also more than happy with your replys. ;D ;D ;D ;D don,t get the the deep purple ones they have to much aflotoxin level on them due to the skin covering , keep to the paleskin ones if possible
bewted Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 don,t get the the deep purple ones they have to much aflotoxin level on them due to the skin covering , keep to the paleskin ones if possible yes, your right,,,i forgot to mention that too, but, only see pale ones mostly and purple ones just skipped my mind !!! good one !
THE FIFER Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 I think what they may be meaning by poisoness to pigeons is that some wid bird peanuts u get in the petshops etc are treated with something for thye wild birds, and is not good for pigeons, although I would think if its ok for wild birds it should be harmless for our pigeons, in saying that I always buy peanuts which are for human consumtion for my birds, but I only give them as a treat, and not too m uch.
rembrant2coo Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 don,t get the the deep purple ones they have to much aflotoxin level on them due to the skin covering , keep to the paleskin ones if possible and away get some work done just because youv,e got wee anes awa tae the skil you think you could play wie your toy oh i shouldna said tha :o :o
The White Rapido Man Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 red skinned peanuts.....great for pigeons......high in protein and fat. They will go barmy for them..... I feed them as a treat a coule now and then..and when fedding youngesters I ice a few more to richen the milk. Over feeding peanuts can have an adverse aeefct on the bird.......but its more the excessive quantities of protien that is harmfull to the bird...as aposed the the peanut itself.

chickadee Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Thank you all very much, it certainly is food for thought, and you have been most helpfull. ;D
Guest dogeon Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 i thought they were bad for yb and i always buy them from morrisons for human consumption as pet shop ones are treated so i dont take the chance
Guest Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 a very well known belgium fancier steven van bremen says he wouldnt be without peanuts ! i myself would not be without them!! i give my birds hundreds over the year and i am known in my club for doing so. infact my best racing hen was named as such(peanut). after flying 254mls from france she flew straight into the cot and turned around for a peanut from me,some say peanuts tame pigeons and stop them racing as good....well that hen was 20th combine in that race out of over 10,000 pigeons. didnt slow her down...or did it?? ;D ;D the part of peanuts poisioning ur birds,is in the nuts that have got a purple tinge to them, which comes onto the pet shop nuts after been stored for a good while. fresh is best but i do use pet shop nuts from a shop in town because they are fresh and keep me chewing, calming my nerves when im waiting for the birds to come back from a race lol ...keep feeding them ..paul

Maybe another reason we are seeing less wild birds, Millions of pounds are spent on peanuts for garden feeders :-/
Guest Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Peanuts are brilliant....Our pigeons go mad for them and there great for putting on the weight for the kings..They also go mad for coconut when feeding youngsters
bewted Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Maybe another reason we are seeing less wild birds, Millions of pounds are spent on peanuts for garden feeders :-/ makes you think a bit,if,as some say, there sprayed with stuff !!! :-/ ??)
Guest j.bamling Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 it is suppose to be the skin of the peanuts what contains a lot of toxins which if over fed can be poisonus to the pigeons !!! thats why some people nuke them in the microwave for a short time before feeding them to the birds !!

Guest shadow Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 only feed peanuts fit for human consumption and you will not go far wrong and limit the amount you feed as they are fattening
mickf Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 to many peanuts can cause fungal problems (candida )

Guest Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 Peanuts are a great aid for providing either extra energy[for racing] or extra weight for showing, the quality is very important, don't think they are poisonous but they can be a cause of fungal yeast infections, hence the need for top quality peanuts only,if in doubt microwave them
chickadee Posted December 11, 2007 Report Posted December 11, 2007 THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE THEM SALTY ;D ;D ;D ha ha ha ...yes I doo..... ;D ;D ;D
