wings Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 Hi when the cocks and hens are feeding the young birds they seem to pick through a lot of the food and most of the food goes to waste, i was wondering what is the best food to feed the young so as to avoid all the waste. i was feeding breed and wean last year and they seemed to chuck a lot of the food out and into the droppings any ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated
pjc Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 either use hoppers they can't throw food out off or control the feed to prevent waste.
wings Posted December 4, 2009 Author Report Posted December 4, 2009 either use hoppers they can't throw food out off or control the feed to prevent waste. The problem is they seem to leave all the maize and larger food if i was to use hoppers then they would end up full of maize, what i was looking for was afeed that they would not pick through and eat the whoole lot.
wings Posted December 4, 2009 Author Report Posted December 4, 2009 try youngbird no maize. will do. is that what you use?
Guest The main Mahon Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 The problem with feeding a mix by hopper is that they will just pick out what they want and leave the rest. My method is to just feed a good breeding mixture at a slightly higher rate than I would do normally. In feeding that way they will eat the lot. I then have a hopper full of layers pellets always available an if either the babies or the parents need topping up, they will use the layers pellets. hether it's right or wrong, you decide but it works for me and the young seem fine brought up like this.

wings Posted December 4, 2009 Author Report Posted December 4, 2009 I FEED LITTLE BUT OFTEN IT MAKES THEM CLEAN UP THERE CHUCK EVERY TIME The problem with this for me is that me and the wife both work so they can only be feed twice aday at the most.
nogin Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 The problem with this for me is that me and the wife both work so they can only be feed twice aday at the most. OH WELL THERE'S NOT MUCH YOU CAN DO ABOUT THAT M8 :-/
Guest IB Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 I have the same experience with mixes, there always seems to be something in it that they don't need / want - with rearing its maize, they toss it. Having a bash at mixing my own, during breeding will feed only a little maize.
blaz Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 i used versalaga breed and wean this year .hopper fed them right through the season .their was food in hopper 24 7. when birds started to get trained to race and through racing i added emperor mix and Jerry plus.the birds would pick out what they new was best for the yb,s and feed them. as the older birds where raced to yb,s or eggs.i always had food in the hoppers. the birds know what seed to eat for themselves.the hoppers i used where deep not like the near flat ones you see for sale. it is also good for yb when they leave the nest as they are quick at picking up where the food is. it gets them sorted for going through to yb secsion.this is just my way of breeding and racing my birds.each to their own
Guest The main Mahon Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 I'm the same as you Wings but I only feed once a day due to working 10 hour days and a one and a half hour commute each way to and from work. As I said, it doesn't seem to affect the babies though.
jimmy white Posted December 4, 2009 Report Posted December 4, 2009 when rearing young birds , the adult birds will eat very little maize, the growth rate of the yb,s from birth to 21 days is is very great,, and for this much protein is needed,, the birds themselves will tell you that,, i would suggest a galley pot of maples , in each nest box, kept topped up,, [even two galley pots ] this off course will encourage the yb,s to eat at a very early age, taking less out the ob,s,, i would also put baby milk in their water, [vits and protein],, then feed a mix of an evening , then a couple of handfull of peanuts,,,,,, hopper feeding a mixture, will only produce wasted grub,

frank-123 Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 someone bred me youngbirds last year they were in strong well built youngbirds compared to mine his feed 50% breeding mix 50% layers pellets so it looks like i might give it a try this coming year
BLACK W F Posted December 5, 2009 Report Posted December 5, 2009 if your going to use the chicken pellets try and get the rearers they are the best what i do is fill all pots with pellets only and leave a hopper on floor filled with pellets when i come home at night i hand feed a mixture but beware they tend to drink more water when useing pellets so i put an extra drinker in you will rear cracking big y/bs have done it this way for years
