Guest frank dooman Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 taboco stalks wait till the hen is covering the bowl put in a hand full of shavings then let the birds build there own byscattering them about the loft & garden
sox Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 best thing to use is news paper and coconut felts as any fluid will go through the felt keeping the nest warm and dry
Guest IB Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 You do not need to put a nest bowl in until 5th / 6th day, or when you see the cock carrying stuff to the box. At this time of year reckon hen will lay 8/10 days after pairing. Nesting material will depend on type of bowl you are using, plastic ones are usually quite shallow, usually straw is enough for them, but earthenware ones are quite deep and these need a base of something like a handful of wood shavings, then straw on top of that.. I use plastic ones with a mesh base that need a nest felt. I give them a nest felt with the bowl, and let them build on top of that themselves, pine twigs etc from garden.
friendsloft Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 best thing to use is news paper and coconut felts as any fluid will go through the felt keeping the nest warm and dry I also put a handful of shavings in between paper and nest felt, then let them build nest using tobbaco stalks cut to about 4 inches in lenght Ken

JAS Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 put a hand full of sand and sawdust mixed together in the pan after been together for 3 days then use tobacco stalks and a bit of good dry straw in to let them build with but make sure it is good quality, no dampness Thats what we use blackdog only diference is we put a beer mate soaked in cresote keeps any creepy crawleys away.
DOVEScot Posted December 7, 2009 Report Posted December 7, 2009 Tobacco stalks if you have lads of money, heather stalks if you live in Scotland and Lavender stalks if you like your loft nice and scented. All deter the bugs along with a pub table coaster soaked in creosote and left to dry placed under the bowl The ones that are in the dove cotes do not get a nest bowl but get the above and twigs cut up for them, I have found cable ties, string and even a wire nail in one of the cotes :-/

Babybird Posted December 8, 2009 Report Posted December 8, 2009 Do you take the nest out to clean under it everyday or just leave it alone? I have mine sitting on plastic box grills with palstic nests and felt with tabacco stalks but there are a load of droppings underneath, should I remove them daily?

Diamond dave Posted December 10, 2009 Report Posted December 10, 2009 I use plastic nest bowls with nest felts super glued (3 spots). A couple of handfuls of long cut barley straw put in a plastic bag and a couple of squirts of duramitex and well shaken then thrown in the loft. When they,ve used it all I throw in some more. I dont disturb the birds until the youngsters are about 12 days old. D.D
