catchthepigeon Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 I have a problem.I have got 6 cocks and 4 hens too many.I dont have enough nest boxes or room for Anymore.I will need these birds for racing this year and the only space i have is 1 section for ybs.Do i take the chance and put them in with the ybs.
pjc Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 reduce the number of birds to meet your nest box accomodation.
catchthepigeon Posted February 6, 2010 Author Report Posted February 6, 2010 reduce the number of birds to meet your nest box accomodation. That will mean killing half my racing team. And i cant afford to do that we have only been back racing the last 2 years and struggling to build a team as it is.
pjc Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 how are you going to race them if you havn't got room to pair them and or motivate them?
Guest Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 That will mean killing half my racing team. And i cant afford to do that we have only been back racing the last 2 years and struggling to build a team as it is. put in some perches and 4 bowls into the corners thats if your flying natural

catchthepigeon Posted February 6, 2010 Author Report Posted February 6, 2010 put in some perches and 4 bowls into the corners thats if your flying natural Yes i fly natural i was thinking about that but wont my ybs get scalped
Guest Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 put a cardboard box over the bowls and the parents will protect them or just let them sit dummy eggs
pjc Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 you are better keeping 6 and racing them correctly than keeping 12 that you can't do anything with!
gulkie Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 get rid ,older hens are ok in beside young birds but not cocks. ;)
catchthepigeon Posted February 6, 2010 Author Report Posted February 6, 2010 put a cardboard box over the bowls and the parents will protect them or just let them sit dummy eggs No i mean the ybs i put in to the section where the ones on the floor will be nesting. And they will be sitting pot eggs.
pjc Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 if you put youngbirds into a section where oldbirds are sitting on the floor the oldbirds will scalp the youngsters!
Guest Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 No i mean the ybs i put in to the section where the ones on the floor will be nesting. And they will be sitting pot eggs. crossed threads here ;D ;D ;D ;D i meant put the old birds all together leave the y/b loft for y/bs only but im afraid the then 2 spare cocks will have to be locked away or removed because they will cause nothing but trouble
PIGEON_MAN Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 If you only have x amount of boxes and space you really need to cut your team down to suit beforehand,I know it is hard to do but its no use having birds over with no room for them,I have had the same problem on quite a few occasions, you have a good season with not many loses then you end up with to many birds,I,m afraid you just have to be ruthless and cut them down to suit the boxes and room available, alhough I am putting 1 old pair into each of my youngbird sections Idont really think its a good idea as the last thing you want is for the old birds to keep attacking the youngsters when you wean them,I will have to cross that bridge when I come to it.
Guest frank dooman Posted February 6, 2010 Report Posted February 6, 2010 Yes i fly natural i was thinking about that but wont my ybs get scalped you need to devise a situation to keep them in the old bird loft (dont risk your y/birds early on) if it was me i would go through all your o/b racers and be extra critical and dispose of the birds that are showing less sign of winning but sometime you are still left with spare birds use thease birds to get the racers going jelousey is a great motivator but you have reached the critical point very soon so now is the time to improve your racers the big mistake we all make at this time is to try and keep them (to many) will put you back to the botton of the ladder again select the best no,s to suit your loft size or build another loft
