karenf Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 Hello I have in my garden a beautiful pigeon that is obviously well cared for. It arrived 2 days ago and is still here. I have given it water and some wild bird food (I hope that's ok, I didn't know what else to give it). I would dearly love it to be reunited with it's owner but I don't know how to find them. It has a bluey green ring on it's leg but I've not yet managed to be able to handle him/her to see any number. I tried to look this morning whilst it was sitting on my window sill tapping on the window, but there I couldn't get it properly. Is this the only way of identifying it. It is very pretty with a white/grey mottled head and bib and the most lovely shade of pinky/lilac on the back of it's neck and green to the sides of it's head. The rest of the body is white with black bands around it's wings. I live in Chirk Bank, but I know that these amazing birds travel long distances so it could come from anywhere! All help greatly appreciated. Regards Karen
OLDYELLOW Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 it may go after a few feeds if not best to catch and keep contained if you get he birds ring number or open its wing it may have a phone number of owner on its feathers sounds like a gay pied blue bar
karenf Posted May 13, 2009 Author Report Posted May 13, 2009 Similar wing markings but much whiter all over. He/she also has a white ring on it's other leg. I am worried for it as I have a very efficient cat...and I would be distraught if he/she came to harm. It is lucky that I have been working at home the last few days and been able to keep cat out of the way but when I am away I have no control over her hunting habits!
pjc Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 if you have a shed or garage, then try to entice it in to it with the wild bird food and then shut it in. Once its in catch the bird and as Mark has said there may be a telephone number stamped in the wing or give us the ring number and we will try and find the owner. Once caught keep it contained away from the cat please with food and water. Than k you for taking the time to try and help the lost bird. Phil
karenf Posted May 13, 2009 Author Report Posted May 13, 2009 I have just managed to get close enough to look at the tag but not close enough to catch it. I can see the numbers 08 and 28 or 20 but the tag has some mess on it and it is obliterating all of it. I can only hope it comes to the floor at some point this evening. Cat is currently indoors and will stay as long as I can suffer the commotion of her wanting to go out!
pjc Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 the ring will have the following in it, GB or WHU or SHU or NEHU followed by a year followed by a letter then a seriel number, i.e GB08A12345
karenf Posted May 13, 2009 Author Report Posted May 13, 2009 I have 2 pics but don't know how to upload them to this forum
karenf Posted May 13, 2009 Author Report Posted May 13, 2009 I have set the best picture as my own image. That was the only way I could think of doing it. The ring still isn't clear though.
pjc Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 go to more post options next to post reply, you will see a browse button, click that find and double click on your image then upload image and post. Must be smaller than 1mb though
karenf Posted May 13, 2009 Author Report Posted May 13, 2009 Thanks but nope...can't see the browse button after I have clicked the post options button. I feel really really stupid as I am an e-learning specialist and can't even find out how to post an image. I have clicked on the image button in the toolbar but it only gives me html code and I don't understand coding.
SakerSam Posted May 13, 2009 Report Posted May 13, 2009 I've had a play and made it bigger..............................hope it works out OK!

Regards Karen well done karen, very good of you to go out of your way to help the bird, you might even end up getting a mate for it! lol then you can breed, then you will be hooked! anyway if you could contain it somehow, we will be to tell you where its from once you get the ring number, all the best
karenf Posted May 16, 2009 Author Report Posted May 16, 2009 I now have the number...wooohoooo! It is GBD02812 I hope this is correct and will help someone. I haven't managed to contain the bird but he is staying in the confines on my garden.
The jannie Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 Karen going by all the info you have posted I make the birds full ring ID GB08D02812. this ring is registered to darlaston+DFC the club sec is mrs T Sheffield 0121 5319201
karenf Posted May 16, 2009 Author Report Posted May 16, 2009 Thank you, I have just rang and left a message with the details for Mrs Sheffield. She is going to call me back. It's is lovely to think that this very pretty bird will soon be back home. Karen
pjc Posted May 16, 2009 Report Posted May 16, 2009 you do need to contain the bird otherwise the owner will not be able to send a courier etc for its return.
karenf Posted May 17, 2009 Author Report Posted May 17, 2009 I would love to and believe me I have tried, but my garden is a very high terraced garden that climbs to the canal at the back of me. Whe I stand on the canalbank at the top of my garden I can check the roof of my house! This lovely bird just flutters to the very part of my roof that I cannot get to him/her. Whe it comes to the floor to feed/take water it moves at exactly the moment I creep up behind it! I am trying...honest....
cowman Posted May 17, 2009 Report Posted May 17, 2009 try sitting down droping some seed just in front of you maybe some peanuts too gain the birds trust and in a short time you should be able to get it close enough to you to pick it up .
