pjc Posted August 22, 2008 Report Posted August 22, 2008 Martin, magpies are another example of interference from the likes of the RSPB! They were protected to the extent that numbers became way above anything known and were proved to be responsible for eating songbirds eggs etc. The protection was then lifted and they are being controlled but there are still plenty around but the balance is being restored. This is whats happening with raptors, they are causing an imballance of nature! Phil
Guest Freebird Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 Redcheqhen,......83......Perfect! Oldyellow, so it's OK to destroy Magpies? I'm not agreeing or dis-agreeing because I don't know crap from pudding, but what about the natural balance of life? Should humans interfere? What about Cuckoos, whos young, in a borrowed nest push out the existing eggs? ...... It might put things into perspective (for me) if a fox were to take one of my cats, I just know I'd be so angry, and find someone with a gun. But I'd be horrified if I hit a fox while driving!....I love foxes, they are so cool! What a mixed up set of emotions we have to contend with... Got a feeling this is out of context with this thread, ...but makes good conversation. Martin Martin we all are animal lovers or we would not be keeping the doos. There are some kindness's that can kill. I've just recently moved to a country cottage and you wouldn't beleive the amount of "wee cuties" were having to kill. If we don't we will just be over run and have a major problem on our hands. I've never liked cats purely because of the birds and the way they slowly kill and play with their pray. I think they are beautiful animals and respect them for what they are but so many people have cats and dump them out at night to go about their business. I would never harm anyones pet as I know they are a part of the family and looked upon as such but cats are pure killing machines and to me not the ideal pet. They do a great job on a farm and I suppose if brought up with pigeons they may be o.k. but you'll be lucky to find a doo man that likes cats.
Guest 67ghirl Posted August 23, 2008 Report Posted August 23, 2008 We have 3 cats and 1 kitten (who is still indoors at the moment). We had to get them after our our old cat died and rats got into the loft! over 100 YB's were lost due to disease caught from the rats. Now our female cat is a prolific hunter and apart from dead baby rats she has brought in we haven't seen any more since ! The strange thing is she enters the loft and walks around amongst the pigeons and has never attempted to attack them. The male cats just give the loft a wide berth. We also have 2 dogs who get on with the cats so just goes to show all God's creatures (well some) can live in Harmony......................exept of course when they try to steal the others food LOL ;D(dizzy)

Sounds good but you are in the minority. Most cats would run ammock in a loft. Oor wee dug just hates cats or I would get a kitten and train it to do just what your one is doing. It's no easy, is it.
sherbs Posted August 25, 2008 Report Posted August 25, 2008 Hi Martin have just been told by a mate that you posted on here asking after the Duke , well the Duke is doing fine he is not going to be raced anymore and he is really starting to moult heavily. He is one of the lucky ones i am racing four other birds at the moment and in fact won my first race on saturday 23/8/08 from Fareham, i also took fifth. The Duke will enjoy a leisurely winter then he will be mated up and a pair of young ones bred from him. Then training will start again and he will once again be flying over your way so you might see him again yet. Thanks for looking out for him and keep the water and food handy as you never know he might have told some of his loft mates about your generosity. All the best, Mark
maggot Posted August 20, 2009 Author Report Posted August 20, 2009 19th August 09, just wondered if Duke is out and about, I have another guest....I've compared with the photos of Duke..and apart from being grey with similar markings I can't tell if it's him. Red ring on right leg and blue on the other can't get the numbers yet though. Been with me for 2 days now. Martin sales@customplastics.co.uk
maggot Posted August 24, 2009 Author Report Posted August 24, 2009 OK, this latest arrival has been with me for a week now. It is relatively safe I guess, not contained and is well fed and watered. I managed to get the red ring details today, which are GB 09 V13247 well as far as I can see. If anyone knows how to let the owner know that it is at my premises in Wellington Somerset then this would be great.........Or am I worrying about nothing? Guest kev d Posted August 24, 2009 Report Posted August 24, 2009 hi martin , just been reading your post if you want any help with pigeons give me a call i live in wellington and race pigeons or if you want to come round and have a look at my birds i live at 31 churchfields , wellington any time you want cheers kev dyson
maggot Posted August 24, 2009 Author Report Posted August 24, 2009 Thanks Kev, I will think about that although it is not my intention to become interested in keeping pigeons. I do however want to get this particular one back to its rightful home. It is at my business address on the Ryelands Industrial estate...Unit 17b and if you were passing at some point we could get the kettle on and discuss this birds future. If it is still there tomorrow then I'll call the ROYAL PIGEON RACING ASSOCIATION, although it does say on their website not to call them if the bird is not retained. I'll try anyway, it can't hurt. Thanks Martin
sherbs Posted August 25, 2009 Report Posted August 25, 2009 Hi Martin unfortunately "The Duke" is missing in action. He went down when i sent him earlier in the season to Lessay . He had been coming fairly well up till that point but the channel was obviously a step too far for the fella. Hope you are well and thanks for the interest, I hope your new guest is repatriated soon, Mark.
