i have put plenty of grit in for them and then also put in minerals. The droppings are by no means perfect but better than they were. Will have a look how they are tomorrow. I have vaccinated all my stock birds for PMV so hope it is not this.

Young Birds Fluffed Up All The Time
Newbie2020 replied to Newbie2020's topic in Help - What's wrong with my bird?
I let my birds out last night. They flew for an hour and trapped well I fed them as much as they could eat. This afternoon on going to the loft they are still choca block with food. One was being sick on the perch. The droppings look perfect and the birds looked ok. Is this normal or should the food have gone through there systems by now? The bird being sick concerned me. Is this the start of young bird sickness or just a result of stupidly overfeeding? -

Mine haven't had a bath at all. I have let them out in the rain once. Could this be the reason? -

they are on natural. They are exercising very well and that is promising. However they dont look the part in the loft. I have named them the 'Van Fluffies' as nothing I do seems to solve this problem. -

Couldnt see anything on the birds at all. Just dipped them purely incase it was a red mite problem. They peck the front of there chests mainly. Dunno what it is at all -

A few of them feel they could do with fattening up a bit. I put more food in last week but then lost control on the trapping. Its the ruffling of the feathers and the constant puffed look that is concerning me -

They are having 2 measuring jugs which can hold 1 and half pints. Each of these is full with corn and that is between the 50 birds. Treated for canker, cocci and worms. At a bit of a loss as to what it is that is wrong. -
My young birds are fluffed up most of the time. They fly well for an hour each day and trap very well. I have treated them for lice and also dipped them for red mite and treated the loft. They appear to be constantly picking there feathering. In the nights I have noticed they seem to ruffle there feathers constantly as if they are shaking themselves. I dont know what else to try. Also after coming in from flying the droppings are very watery. After they have had a feed they return to normal. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. When I dipped them I held them under the water for upto 10 seconds and opened each wing and held them there for another 10 seconds. Is this long enough to rid them of any red mite they might have?

have you got a contact number and where does he live?

Does anyone have a contact number for one of the dropping/throat testing companies in the BHW or the Racing Pigeon please? And are they any good, if so can any be recommended?

I dont understand darkness. Can someone explain. Is it meant to help the birds moult faster or delay the moult? What times should the loft be dark. How long do you do this for? How long after weaning do the young birds go on the darkness? When do the birds moult when on the system?

young birds 3 to 5 days diein in nest
Newbie2020 replied to ron123's topic in Help - What's wrong with my bird?
what would be the best thing to treat with if you have young dying in the egg or in the nest -
I agree with the wattles and the eyes, but the sheen is definitely non existent. Think the camera flash has help create this. I am hoping to go back to the vets tomorrow and gonna ask for the works to be done on them to find out what exactly is going on.
-
I will still have plenty of ventilation in the loft as i have a 6 inch gap running along the back of the loft and have 3 louves on the front of the loft, so think there will still be plenty of airflow. I feel I have to do something as the birds are so out of condition its unbelievable. I just think the 6 x 3 area of wire mesh may need to be covered up
-
Even when its been nice they have been looking the same. I just dont know else I can do. I dont know whether to put some sheeting on the loft to stop the cold winds blowing directly into the loft? I really am so disheartened
-
Yes giving them plenty of food but been like this for about 7 weeks now. Really getting me down in the dumps and I feel like jacking the lot in. Been to the vets and come back drawing a blank. I hate going up to the loft each day as I know they are going to be looking like this.
-
I ask the question as my birds are looking dreadful and dont know what is wrong with them. Taken to vet and come back clear, slight canker, but been treated for that with pills he gave. They just puff up like in the pictures all the time. I let them out earlier and they flew for 20 minutes.

What do people regard as a draft in a loft? I have a corridor on my loft which has wire mesh half way up which exposes the loft to the elements but mainly catches the corridor. The wind blows straight through and directly into the main loft with the boxes on the back wall. I hear about pigeons not liking drafts so how does this stand?

been to see one said they had canker and slight respiratory but only gave me canker pills and charged me a fortune for that cant afford to go back again so not really treating blind as such
-
Yeah I agree but you aint seen my birds. they cant even eat properly as all there necks are swollen. treated for canker and now gonna try this stuff
