  1. Hyacinth, Maybe I missed a message? The information I have that you gave me was that it is in St. George and it is on a weekend. I dont recall a date mentioned.
  2. Oh .. Looks like I missed it. I am in Utah and would have liked to see how everything works in the world of pigeon racing. Is there somewhere I can see when events are happening?
  3. Has anyone tried the "candle warmers"? they are meant to melt the wax in scented candles so you dont have an open flame. They get pretty warm.

    WING STAMPS

Sorry for the newbie question but, where do you stamp a bird? under the feathers on the wing? also is it just normal ink that wears off ?
  5. The only problem I have heard about besides the temperature extreme is if the air is too dry and the egg looses moisture. The way I have heard works best is to put them in a container full of birdseed or something similar. Im told the seed keeps the humidity more stable. I have had eggs hatch when they were refrigerated for a week, some that were room temp. for a while also hatched. Not as many hatch though, seems "the sooner the better" is true for this.
  6. I have gotten some great information from you all on this site and I would love to learn more about the sport. I will send you a private message Hyacinth and I apreciate the help, I had no idea how to get my foot in the door. It would be great if I could go to the race in St. George I would like to see how it works. Im near Salt Lake so it would be a bit of a drive, but I have some time before February to figure it out. Thanks
  7. Im 23 and I just started getting into pigeons reciently, I didnt have any exposure to pigeons at all until a neighbor had a loft but he was always grumpy to me and didnt like kids. The only information on racing pigeons I have found on the internet, for example I am still unsure about "darkness and widowhood" and "eye sign" and the basic process of racing pigeons. The pets most people have here is basic dog cat parakeet ect, until I got the internet I didnt have anything to get my interest. There is also the fact that most parents think pigeons are dirty and dont want to take the chance bringing their kids into it, and now the horse sickness named because it puffs the chest like a pigeon and the bird flu are making it even worse.
  8. Thanks speedbird, I think I will wait and keep him inside. I just wish that since hes in the bathroom all day that he would learn to use the toilet! Lucky we have 2 bathrooms. It is funny to see the look we get from guests when we explain why they cant use the upstairs bathroom though. This whole flu issue is a mess.. I hope they find a way to set it right soon.
  9. This is not pigeon related, but I was going to build a chicken coop for the rooster that is living in my bathroom, I am in the US. Do you think I should wait for the flu to settle down before starting the coop and putting the bird outside? I dont want him to get sick and I also dont want anyone panicing about having a chicken close and having him taken or killed for testing.
  10. :B Whoops dont know why it posted my message so many times... My work computer was giving me some trouble that day :
  11. Found this on another pigeon board seems to be a good sign that they are looking into it and not jumping to conclusions. http://www.avian-influenza.com/ Quote from site: "Avian Influenza in Pigeons Various studies have been carried out to determine the role of pigeons in the spread of avian influenza. These studies have determined that pigeons are resistant or minimally susceptible to infection with HPAIV or NPAIV and probably play a minimal epidemiological role in the spread of the viruses. For further information see the following two articles: Pathogenicity of a Hong Kong-origin H5N1 highly pathogenic avian influenza virus for emus, geese, ducks, and pigeons. Perkins LE, Swayne DE Pigeons were inoculated intranasally with A/chicken/Hong Kong/220/97 (H5N1) highly pathogenic avian influenza virus. They seemed resistant to infection not showing any clinical signs or gross and histologic lesions and the virus was not re-isolated. Susceptibility of pigeons to avian influenza. Panigrahy B, Senne DA, Pedersen JC, Shafer AL, Pearson JE Pigeons were inoculated with non-pathogenic avian influenza virus and highly pathogenic avian influenza virus. The pigeons remained clinically healthy and virus was not re-isolated." birds for free

Wish there were offers like this would happen in my area, shipping from scotland would be crazy. I need to get a loft first anyways though. Hatchling level now
  16. Doostalker, I dont think I have a bad impression of racers, I think it is an interesting hoby/sport and it would be fun to do. I also think you guys are doing a great job of changing the thought that pigeons are dirty and full of disease. I do have a bad impression on gun dog training though, I had a friend when I was younger whos neighbor trained bird dogs on his front lawn...let the dogs violently at the birds and it was not a good childhood memory. I am glad to hear there are some hunters that train without harming the birds. The only reasons I dont want to race just yet is because I really dont have much information on the subject, I dont like the thought of my birds not coming home after a race, and my neighbor behind me has pigeons and im not sure how that would effect my birds if I got a loft. I was just tring to say that I would rather have the birds come to me than be killed
  17. Maybe an Indirect son is one from an egg that was placed under another momma pigeon?
  18. Being that I am looking for a loft for pleasure not to race, I would much rather have the retired, culled birds in my loft because they dont need to race, I just like to see them fly around the house and I love to hear the sound of a flock's wings as they fly past. I agree with not giving them over for bait, I would rather have them live a happy life to their old age and give them what they deserve. They work so hard for the racers. They deserve to be cared for by someone that will apreciate their life. Also I am glad to hear you have found a way to train without harming the birds.
  19. She doesnt seem overweight and she flys around in the house, I have a pet room that has been pigeon proofed and she has free run of the room when im home but busy, and when Im not busy she has roam of the whole basement or wherever I am at the time. She doesnt get alot of food, she has a small dish and she doesnt finish it all but eats most of it. What is the average weight of a female year old pigeon? I was thinking about keeping her inside and getting other pigeons for outside only, I dont have a shed or i would convert it I have been looking for a prebuilt loft or a shed to convert but with no luck, I want to build an aviary type pen outside for my house birds and then I can bring her in at night
  20. I checked on her and she was walking around again and looking great, giving me the "not again..why do you keep picking me up and poking my feet" look. She isnt puffy and her droppings still look fine, I think it may have been the egg pinching something, is there anything to make laying easier for her? She didnt seem too upset about the whole ordeal but it sure was hard on me Im going to ask the vet about it again to be sure. The whole tablet thing is easier said than done for a newbie... I could get it to the back of her mouth and then she would use her tounge and push it back out. Next time I will get someone to help hold her so I have my hands free. Im tring to get into some vet classes so Im not clueless about what to do in situations like these. Thanks for all the support and sudgestions. You guys are great!
  21. what is old hands elementals and where can I find it? I called the vet and the Dr that sees Birds was not in and I didnt want to take her in to a vet that doesnt usually see birds, especially not pigeons and have him misdiagnose her, It is just an exotic animal vet, they ususlly see parrots and such. I havent seen this happen to her before but she has had a hard time with eggs but usually she just gets puffy for a day and then she is ok. I gave her a little vitamin D (I think she got some in her mouth anyways) How the heck are you supposed to give a pigeon a tablet? No matter how I tried it I couldnt get her to swallow the geltab of vitamin D so I poked a hole in it and tried to squeeze some in her mouth. This morning she looked like she has a little more use of her legs again. I took a UVB light from my reptile cage and put it on top of her pen before I left to work. If she doesnt seem better when I get home I will try another vet clinic. She is the only Pigeon I have right now, no one will help me build a coop and I cant find one that anyone is selling one near my area. Im starting to wonder if she knows she is a pigeon since the other baby I had died when it was very young. I dont know if I would be able to put her with other birds. I was concerned that I might not know enough to get alot of them at once but it looks like I have a good information source here. Thanks everyone
  22. I was researching this and I found this site http://www.silvio-co.com/pigeons/Parathyroid.htm Would you give me your opinion on this?
  23. This is her second egg this lay, I should have said that differently, what I was meaning is that she had one wood egg and a real one, I was exchanging the real one out for a wood one. Every other time she had trouble with her eggs she would get puffy and wobbly and she is not acting like anything is wrong, she just cant walk. I will mention that to the vet also just to be sure, I really apreciate the help.
  24. I will mention that to the vet thank you! what would cause paratyphoid? She is not around any other birds and she is inside the house. Do you think she will be ok since i have to wait until monday?
