  7. I have a simple 16 x 6 loft - It is two 8x6' garden sheds end on end - 3 sections 8x6 for old birds(Natural) - 2 sections of 4x6' one for the youngsters - other for separated hens. Can't believe some of the loft sizes mentioned.... makes the mind boggle 8) I keep 12 pair of old birds, no stock, and breed no more than 30 youngsters and even that is an over estimate!
  8. I think that you can go buy birds off the top flyers in the country and still not win. You can have the best birds but unless you know what you are doing, you have no chance! At the beginning of this year,(2010), I bought 9 birds, (8 off here), and they bred me youngsters that all flew the channel and were in the top 10 of a strong club and 44th section NFC. these birds all cost £15 each. I think you have to have a system that works for you, and good healthy birds to send. On top of this, you have to have patience and a willingness to sit and observe!
  9. Fancier pair up now in order to get the youngsters on the darkness and through a moult so that they are flying almost adults when young bird season comes along.... not for me
  10. by letting the birds have the winter OFF! No need to breed this late in the year or so early in the new year... I understand those fanciers that want to get a head start to gain an advantage... but, no, not for me... all that expense on electric feed and so on... my birds were bred in May and competed in the NFC young bird National from carentan and also the final fed race from Guernsey, and I wasn't out of the top 10 in a strong club! All my birds have moulted well and look great, all 2010 youngsters flew the channel and I lost just 4 out of the 26 I started with.... Michael Saint
  11. I know the area well, used to live the other side of Peterborough might be tempting...
  12. HI very nice birds, I'm sure they will go - but just where are you in the country?
  13. Here is my Chicken Shed... consists of two 8' x 6' sheds making 1 section(racers) of 8'x6' & 2 sections(hens & YB) of 4'x6' I have done some more work on it recently so will update photo when I have some batteries for the camera

  15. pm sent, but just in case:- what line of dordin is lot 16 de klak x dordin and is the hen likely to be available?? Mike
  16. last year for me taught me a lesson.... in earlier years I too bred early, mainly for the One Loft Races, but these have become too expensive to enter. Last year, because of the move, my youngsters were bred in May, and these were still old enough to race and even did Guernsey! So with that in mind, why breed early just to see your well bred and hopes dashed before they have even had a chance by hawks and any other reasons to be lost? No, for me, I pair up later, less worry, less feed & fewer losses.... Mike Saint
