  1. thanks phil, having kept pigeons and raced from leeds throughout my life following on from my dad bernard thorton, and my grandfather frank thornton, then giving up , due to unforseen circumstances, this new start just seems to be hard work, the big plus is , having already experienced young bird sickness three week ago, my pigeons which were donated free of charge from 2 local fanciers are an exceptional team of 21, and i can boast a 100% record of twice 9 mile on the day training !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  2. thanks pjc , BUT ? how can i race if the club has not paid my fees in time to get an official loft number , allowing me time to transfer my pigeons ?? i might eventually let it be known who this secretary is , a well known national member
  3. here we are 3 weeks away from racing young birds and i still have no loft number officially,. in april i applied to join my local club in south cheshire, as soon as i wasd accepted i pid all my fees by cheque, having asked the secretary on three occasions if there was any notice of my region /rpra loft number, the answer was "i will chase it up" , here we are in july , !!! and this last week i contacted the region myself, to see if my club secretary had notified them , they told me what my loft number will be, BUT, my club needs to send the fee !! , my gripe is that i need 2 weeks plus to transfer my young birds, plus get my loft location (i asked sec twice), plus distances to apply for, my clock needs testing , should i perservere with this club , or should i ask for my money back and join an alternative club who may be up to speed ? dave

    best book

story wise , as a young lad , my appetite was whetted by jw langstones books,
  5. I had young bird sickness , three week back, one died on perch so it needs treating fast , i went to vets who gave me baytril 2.5% , treat for a full seven days . the dosage was 4 ml to 8 ml (for 20 birds)in the water twice a day, instant recovery , but do the full course. £28 was the cost of the baytril to give you an idea of cost
  6. thanks darkness, my m8 got his 1st at 15.08 with classic, 7 .10 lib , 7 hours 58 for 368 miles , then took seven minutes to clock
  7. thanks you two, three of us sat having a cuppa, and our guestimate is around 8 + hours , high 1380 vel??? maybe even faster if the weather and wind is kind lol !
  8. north staffs are up at 8.10am i am told from messac, wsw wind, and the north west classic at the same racepoint at 7.10am . my neighbours sent to both flying 378 miles, so it would be nice to know how the gloucester and severn pigeons are coming , thanks
  9. update, My partner spoke to the S.H.U. sec, it seems i did not recieve their 1st e mail, due to them having problems with their site just been set up, i recieved a mail from them on the 15th april , but this went straight to my spam folder (seems my internet service provider didn't recognise it) so, the matter is resolved with the shu, and hopefully the owner will contact me shortly. sorry for doubting the integrity of the shu , alls well that ends well
  10. i think the next step is a letter to the pigeon weeklys , stateing what a lack of concern comes from the scottish fraternity ? as backed up in one of the initial replys on this subject
  11. 3 e mails , 3 seperate weeks ? this is the shu i am talking about !! the scottish organisation , not some 2 bit club , but the people who run the "hobby" in scotland . i am afraid this just a lack of care and concern, stated in my original and 2 subsequent e mails this pigeon was injured and that i am not a member << joe public
  12. surely as most young bird (and shorter) old bird races are won by seconds, time permitting , it would be sensible to give(after basket training) initial young bird training as many times as possible from say 2 to three miles on a direct line , then 5, 10, etc, before moving them on to a good breaking point ?
  13. hey ho !!! another full week passes and still no contact about this hen from the shu !!! should i just dispose of the pigeon in that time honoured old fashioned way !!! that nobody dares talk about to the general public,, or should i give the shu (i know they are probably busy) another week !!
  14. sorry clockman , they already have my phone number, the last thing i want to do, is interupt a very busy sec, they have had time to reply, do the shu not have to accept liability for their strays?
  15. I'd just like to say a big thankyou to stuart (cloudview)for giving me (free of charge) 14 young birds, from some of the best distance stock around, to get me re - started after a six year break and a move to another county, this type of pigeon would have cost me hundreds of pounds to buy, yet he donated them to me, plus loft equipment free, lets hope i can do them justice, and as i have kept and raced successfully before, i'm sure this batch are as good as any i have ever had , once again thanks stuart
  16. just reported her for the third time , and told them if there is no contact i will get in touch with the british confederation of racing pigeons to seek there advice on what step to take next !! as the shu are members anybody reckon the shu sec might just e mail me ?? lol
  17. here we are again , a full fortnight after reporting her via the shu website , no acknowledgement !!! from the shu, or anybody, even though i sent a second e mail last friday
  18. continued >>> in the past , when i was based in leeds i elongated the hours to use the basics of lightness to get latebreds through the wing moult, i am trying darkness this year now that i have re started , but in my heart of hearts , i know , that i should forget young bird achievements and do natural to attain a potential champion !!! am i right ?
  19. lightness system ? i would have thought april maybe too mlate to start ? , but the principil is , that you elongate the hours oflightness, so the young birds fully moult including the primary feathers as well as the body feathers , though from what i have read , the primary extremes are still growing in august when your youngsters should be at their best ?, plenty of good belgiums have done booksd etc dave
  20. is it an annan pigeon ?. the shu website said they would acknowledge my mail , but to date have not. dave
  21. Blue hen , found in cheshire , damaged by wires probably, but recovering well. i reported this a full week ago to the SHU. but have not had any reply from them ? is this usual ? dave
  22. oops !! i'm in south cheshire thanks
  23. Hello all, I am just getting ready to re-start after a six year break and now having settled in a new area, you can imagine there are various items i will need. i am very grateful for the young birds that are being provided from a pigeon basics member, and the sort of thing i am looking for is/are, a basket(15bird)approx, drinkers , sputnik, clock, aviary, whatever that might interest me, i will be willing to pay a fair price for anything i require, if you feel you might have something of interest to me, please don't hesitate to contact me , thankyou dave
  24. [face=Arial][/face]Genetics in colour or sex is a big subject !! , nice reading from the contributers , , having been fetched up with pige9ons from a small boy ,and having read about genetics and chromosones , i still can't get my head around anything other than "x paired to y can produce x or y, with discrepencies (throwbacks) from the grand parents which being a racer equels , winner to winner has a better percentage of throwing winners ? colour does not need tobe considered if chaseing the "ultimate racer ? << loves dark uns lol !!
